Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Prehistory is:

Answer: The study of history before written records.

The earliest form of writing is known as cuneiform. It literally means 'wedge-shaped'. The Neolithic people made records using a reed stylus in wet clay!
2. The Paleolithic Era is based on what?

Answer: Hunting, gathering and the use of stone and bone tools and the use of fire

The Paleolithic people were a product of their surroundings, but unlike any other animal, created tools to make their living simpler.
3. The Neolithic Era is based on what?

Answer: Building stationary homes, farming, and agriculture.

The Neolithic people made more refined tools of polished stone.
4. Notable features of the Neolithic era (of Mesopotamia) included:

Answer: All of these

The Neolithic people had burial sites and are the first known civilization to connect the living to the dead with tombs.
5. Ancient Egypt was a polytheistic culture. What is polytheism?

Answer: The belief in many gods

Ancient Egyptians only had one period of Monotheism, but it didn't last long before they went back to their polytheistic beliefs.
6. A notable structure, built by Ramses II, is carved into solid rock. Inside holds massive statues and a long corridor. At the end of the corridor is a room where four statues sit. On February 22 and October 22, the light shines just so to illuminate these four statues. What is this structure called?

Answer: The Temple Abu-Simbel.

During the 1960s, the temple had to be moved or would've been destroyed by a flood. When modern architects moved it, they couldn't replicate what the Ancient Egyptians had done, and since the move there have been shadows that reach back instead of highlighting the four statues.
7. A hydraulic society is:

Answer: A society that survives by irrigation and flood.

Ancient Egypt was the perfect place for a hydraulic society since the Nile Delta was so predictable! In fact, it is said that the Nile is the inspiration for pyramids for as the Nile retreated, a pyramid was left in its mud and this was thought to have been a communication from the gods.
8. The culture that introduced iron and superior military were:

Answer: The Hittites.

The Hittites made iron war chariots that were drawn by horses. No other culture was known to have made such a remarkable invention so early.
9. King Nebuchednezzar II most notably:

Answer: Burned Jerusalum, raided the Temple, and took the inhabitants.

This can be found in the book of Job in the Bible.
10. The culture to bring us the Western alphabet (indirectly) was:

Answer: The Phoenicians.

The Phoenicians created a 22 character alphabet that laid the grounds for all Western alphabets!
