1. Which boxer, who won more heavyweight bouts than any other American in the 20th century, is buried in Arlington National Cemetery?

From Quiz
Who's Who of Arlington Cemetery

Answer: Joe Louis

Joe Louis was born Joseph Louis Barrow on May 13, 1914 in LaFayette, Alabama. He started his amateur boxing career during the 1930s. When he turned to professional boxing, he had an amateur record of fifty wins, and four losses, with forty-three knockouts. When Joe Louis moved to professional boxing, he fought in sixty-nine pro fights and only had three losses. He had fifty-two knockouts, and held the heavyweight championship from 1937 to 1949, longer than any boxer in the 20th century. Louis died in 1981 at the age of 66. Ronald Regan waived the eligibility rules for burial at Arlington National Cemetery for him. Louis was buried there on April 21, 1981.

2. In which year did the Glasgow Necropolis officially open?

From Quiz Necropolis in a Metropolis

Answer: 1833

Historically, the responsibility for burying the dead in Britain lay with the parish church, but after a change in the law in 1832, 'burial for profit' was allowed. With Glasgow's growing population and decreasing number of people attending church, an alternative to the church burial grounds was clearly needed and the Glasgow Necropolis was officially opened in April 1833.

From Quiz Hollywood Forever - Resting Place of the Stars

Answer: Don Adams

Don Adams (1923-2005) was a comedian turned actor whose greatest fame was as the spy Maxwell Smart in the spoof espionage series "Get Smart". Smart fans may have noticed I packed a few of his most used sound bites into the question. A phone hidden in the heel of a shoe was also a way Smart had of contacting his bosses. The show ran for five seasons from 1965. It was created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry and was a send-up of mainstream serious espionage productions, such as the James Bond movies.

9. What is unusual about the Saint Louis Cemetery, which is located in New Orleans, Louisiana?

From Quiz Final Resting Places of the World

Answer: All the graves are above-ground vaults

Constructed in the 18th century, the Saint Louis Cemetery is in fact three Roman Catholic cemeteries that contain only above-ground vaults. These very elaborate burial grounds are located close to the Mississippi River and are prone to flooding. These cemeteries are a popular tourist attraction in the city and contain wonderful examples of Gothic Revival architecture. The above ground vaults were used because of flooding issues, but were also a pre-existing French and Spanish burial tradition.

10. A leader of British politics, Winston Churchill's funeral was held at St. Paul's Cathedral, but he was buried at St Martin's Church in Bladon. The church and cemetery are located in which English county?

From Quiz 'Sultans' at Rest

Answer: Oxfordshire

Located near Woodstock, and the Blenheim Palace, St Martin's Church was opened in 1804, on the site of a church that had been constructed around the 11th or 12th century. With major renovations occurring in 1891, the churchyard is the site of the Churchill family burial plot. The church is dedicated to St Martin of Tours. Oxfordshire is located in the southeastern area of England, and in addition to being home to Blenheim Palace, several other notable buildings can be found in the county, including the University of Oxford, Chastleton House and Mapledurham House. And, the illustrations of Toad Hall in 1908's "The Wind in the Willows" may have been based on Mapledurham House.

11. The entire Taj Mahal complex was designed and built by Shah Jahan with great attention to symmetry. Which is the only thing that is out of place in the complex?

From Quiz How Did I End Up Inside Here?

Answer: Shah Jahan's tomb

Shah Jahan saw to it that the entire structure including the outlying gardens were built in perfect symmetry. If a line is drawn through the centre of the complex, the two halves will be mirror images. While there is a mosque on the western side of the tomb, an identical structure was built on the eastern side only to maintain symmetry and was called 'Jawab' which means answer or reply. This structure may have been used as a resting house for relatives and other visitors to the tomb though that was not the primary purpose behind its construction. The only thing that breaks the symmetry of the complex is Shah Jahan's tomb. Shah Jahan never intended for himself to be buried inside the Taj. He is thought to have been considering commissioning an elaborate tomb for himself when he was overthrown and imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb. When Shah Jahan died, he was buried in the Taj beside his beloved wife. Thus, Shah Jahan's grave is the only thing in the entire complex which is slightly out of place.

12. Requests for burial in Arlington National Cemetery skyrocketed after the death of which American president?

President Kennedy's grave is marked with the eternal flame.

From Quiz U.S. Presidential Burial Sites II

Quincy, MA is sometimes called "The City of Presidents" as it is the only city in the US in which two presidents were born and are buried.

19. Which other famous cemetery inspired the creation of the Glasgow Necropolis?

From Quiz Necropolis in a Metropolis

Answer: Père-Lachaise, Paris

The Glasgow Necropolis covers 37 acres and is an ornamental, garden cemetery with a landscape modelled on the famous Père-Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, established several decades earlier in 1804. John Strang, Chamberlain of Glasgow's Merchants' House, had visited Père-Lachaise and in 1831 produced a pamphlet called "Necropolis Glasguensis", which advocated the building of a new garden burial ground in Glasgow.

20. Mazar-e-Quaid, also known as the Jinnah Mausoleum, is the mausoleum of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, widely held as the founder of modern Pakistan. It is located in the same city he was born in. Name the city.

Muhammad Ali Jinnah was the leader of the All-India Muslim League in British India from 1913 till the establishment of Pakistan, the formation of which was to a great extent due to his efforts. He was also the first Governor-General of Pakistan. Mazar-e-Quaid was designed by Yahya Merchant and its architecture was inspired by the Samanid Mausoleum in Uzbekistan, which is the final resting place of Ismail Samani, a Persian amir. It also contains the tombs of Muhammad Ali Jinnah's sister Fatima Jinnah, and Liaquat Ali Khan, the first Prime Minister of Pakistan.

22. Two US Presidents (James Monroe and John Tyler) and one Confederate President (Jefferson Davis) are buried in Hollywood Cemetery. In which state is this cemetery located?

From Quiz US Presidential Burial Sites

Answer: Virginia

23. Arguably the most beautiful tomb in the world today, which mausoleum was built by Shah Jahan as a monument and final resting place for his beloved wife?

From Quiz Burying the Infamous Famous

Answer: Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal and its marble-domed roof-top is one of the most recognizable buildings in the world. It is also one of the most beautiful, remarkable, and romantic buildings in Asia. Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan lost his third, and most favorite, wife in 1631 during the birth of their 14th child. Grief stricken, he immediately began building the Taj Mahal. It took over 20 years to complete the mausoleum which now houses the body of his Persian princess, Mumtaz Mahal, and his own body that was interred there in 1658.
