Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'The Battle of the Three Emperors'. One famous Emperor achieved a decisive victory, in spite of being outnumbered by the other two.

Answer: Napoleon defeated Alexander I of Russia and Franz II of Austria

This is the Battle of Austerlitz, the pinnacle of Bonaparte's career. With only 73,000 men and 139 guns he soundly defeated the Allies' 84,500 men and 278 guns (December 2, 1805).
2. In three of the following battles of the Hundred Years War, English longbowmen crushed the best of the French chivalry. Which is NOT one of these battles?

Answer: Battle of Oudenarde

In this battle of the War of the Spanish Succession, the Dukes of Burgundy and Vendome were defeated by the musketeers led by Marlborough. In the other battles named, the French leaders kept trying their frontal assaults until the arrival of Joan of Arc to the command of the French forces.
3. On October 14, 1066, the Normans of William the Bastard (afterwards named the Conqueror) defeated Harold's Saxons. Name this famous battle.

Answer: Hastings

The Saxons were tired because they had fought another battle at Stamford Bridge two weeks before Hastings. They had beaten and killed Harald Hardraada of the Vikings and Earl Tostig, King Harold's own brother.
4. The consequences of this battle were the end of the French rule over Indochina, and the creation of North and South Vietnam.

Answer: Battle of Dien Bien Phu

The Viet Minh forces under General Vo Nguyen Giap captured the fortress where the Foreign Legionnaires and French colonial troops intended to 'bring to battle and decisively destroy the VietMinh'.
5. In this battle, the VI Armee (some 300,000 Germans under Feldmarschall Paulus) was completely surrounded and forced to surrender by the Soviets ('Operation Uranus').

Answer: Battle of Stalingrad

Perhaps the most decisive battle of Second World War. Hitler became so obsessed with the capture of the city (maybe because of its name), that he left the flanks of his offensive protected only by weak Romanian and Italian armies, thus sealing VI Armee's fate.
6. Which of these naval battles of the Pacific War was the only one where the opposing fleets came within each other's line of sight?

Answer: Battle of Surigao Strait

This was the last 'classic' battleship engagement ever fought. A Japanese surface force under Rear Admiral Shoji Nishimura was utterly destroyed (including battleships Fuso and Yamashiro and many cruisers and destroyers) by a U.S. battleship task force under Rear Admiral Jesse Oldendorf. The other three are carrier battles where only the planes could see the enemy ships.
7. Which of these battles had the highest number of military casualties?

Answer: Battle of the Somme

Estimated casualties: 420,000 British - 195,000 French - 650,000 German - Estimated total: 1,265,000.
8. In this battle Hannibal's tactical genius obliterated an enormous Roman army, twice the size of his own forces.

Answer: Battle of Cannae

Hannibal had 30,600 infantrymen and 10,600 cavalrymen. The Romans had 80,000 and 6,400 respectively. Roman losses were around 71,500, either dead or captured (83 percent). Hannibal lost less than 6,000 of his men. This is perhaps the best fought battle of all time!
9. Which of these battles involved "double envelopment"?

Answer: Battle of Tannenberg

German generals Von Hindenburg and Ludendorff enveloped Russian Armies under Rennenkampf and Samsonov. The Russian losses were an estimated at 150,000 or more.
10. In this air battle, the German Luftwaffe suffered its first great defeat. Which battle was it?

Answer: Battle of Britain

Ok, the last one was really easy! 'Never ... was so much owed by so many to so few'.
