1. Mount Suribachi, site of a famous American flag raising, is located where?

Answer: Iwo Jima

Five U.S. Marines and a U.S. Navy corpsman raised the American flag on Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945. Joe Rosenthal took the historic photograph. His photo won a Pulitzer Prize for Photography. Marine Felix de Weldon used this photo in 1954 to sculpt the Marine Corps War Memorial which was placed near the Arlington National Cemetery.

Answer: First long-distance telephone line

4. What "timely" event allowed notorious gang leader Salvatore "Sam" Cardinella to live one extra hour?

Answer: Daylight Saving Time

In the fall of 1920, Salvatore "Sam" Cardinella was sentenced to death for murdering a saloon keeper. When his execution was scheduled for April 1921, he appealed to a judge to allow him to be executed one hour later than the initially scheduled time.

He argued that Daylight Saving Time would unfairly rob him of an hour of his rapidly shortening life. The judge agreed and allowed Sam the extra hour before the execution was carried out.

5. Which of these world leaders did NOT attend the Yalta Conference?

Answer: Charles DeGaulle

U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin were the "Big Three" Allied leaders in World War II who arranged to meet in February 1945 in Yalta, a city on the coast of the Black Sea coast of the Crimean Peninsula.

The purpose of he meeting was to figure out the fate of Germany after being defeated by the Allies. They decided that Germany would be divided into four zones, controlled by American, British, French and Soviet military forces.

Although France's leader, Charles de Gaulle, wasn't invited to the Yalta Conference, Stalin agreed to include France in the post-war governing of Germany with the stipulation that France's occupation zone be an area ceded to them by the American and British zones.

6. Major General James P. Wolfe and Major General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm met in battle on the Plains of Abraham in 1759. In the history of which country was this a pivotal battle?

Answer: Canada

Did the English and French names, respectively, of the combatants give you a clue that this question was about the Nation of the Two Solitudes? The Battle of the Plains of Abraham, also known as the Battle of Quebec, was the turning point of the North American portion of the Seven Years War.

The extremely short battle - some reports say it only took 15 minutes - led to the British capture of Quebec, and, eventually, the Treaty of Paris. The guarantees in that treaty of religious and language freedom to the residents of Quebec contributed greatly to the character of the future development of Canada. Both Wolfe and Montcalm died on the battlefield.

8. On which part of his body would a medieval knight wear his gauntlet?

Answer: His hand

A gauntlet was a glove that was made of chainmail and/or articulated metal armor. When a medieval knight made a challenge he threw his gauntlet on the ground, the act of picking it up meant that the person who picked it up had accepted the challenge. This is the origin of the phrase "To throw down the gauntlet".
