Answer: Edward Teach

He left his home in Bristol and sailed the seas as a trader. He later became a pirate and was given the nickname Blackbeard for obvious reasons.
2. Alfred Nobel is famous for establishing the Nobel Prizes in his will, including the Nobel Peace Prize. What is Alfred Nobel noted for having invented?

Answer: Dynamite

After he had invented dynamite he believed that the deaths of thousands of people were his fault as he had invented a killing substance. He did not want to remembered as the man to blame for thousands of deaths. That is why the Nobel Prizes that he created include the Peace Prize.
3. At William the Conqueror's funeral there was a lot of drama, but which of these did NOT happen?

Answer: A horse ran through the church

He was buried in the Abbaye aux Hommes in Caen, Normandy.
4. What did the suffragette Emily Davison do at Derby Day June 1913?

Answer: Fell under the king's horse

She died four days later in hospital. ('King's horse' means horse owned by the king, not ridden by him).

The Treaty of Versailles was signed that day, exactly five years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

It was originally named Swein's Island as it was an island at the time. It later evolved to Swansea.

A war against Octavian saw Marc Anthony's bitter end. Octavian spread rumours that Cleopatra, Marc Anthony's love at the time, was dead. Marc Anthony believed these rumours and in 30BC commited suicide by falling on a sword. Cleopatra later commited suicide by getting an asp to bite her.
9. What was the name of Henry VIII'S fourth wife?

Answer: Anne of Cleves

Anne of Cleves was German-born on the 22nd September 1515. She was Queen of England from 6 January 1540 to 9 July 1540, when Henry VIII decided to get a divorce. She was then followed by Kathryn Howard and Katherine Parr.
10. Which of these kings of Britain came from Germany?

Answer: George I

George I was the Elector of Hanover when he ascended the British throne. He spent much of his life in Germany his English was said to be weak. To some extent this assertion may have been hostile propaganda.
