Answer: Edmund Barton

Edmund Barton came from Sydney to become the first Prime Minister of Australia in 1901. He was one of the leaders in the push for Federation.
2. From 1904 to 1905 Japan was at war. Which country did Japan defeat?

Answer: Russia

The victory in this war elevated Japan to world power status. Japan gained southern Sakhalin island and Russia's port and rail rights in Manchuria, as well.
3. What Portuguese explorer became the first European to reach the area now occupied by Brazil in 1500 A.D.?

Answer: Pedro Cabral

He was, however, not the first European explorer to reach the South American mainland, or Brazil...which was why I was careful to say 'Portuguese'...ah ha!

Answer: Abu Bakr

Abu Bakr was the father of Muhammed's wife Ayesha. He was a close adviser to Muhammed and helped expand Muslim territory during his short stint as first caliph.
5. Which pope bestowed the title 'defender of the faith' on Henry VIII for condemning Martin Luther?

Answer: Leo X

Leo X was a busy pope. A member of the prominent de Medici family of Florence, he was a great patron of the arts, funding the restoration of St. Peter's Church in Rome, among other things. He also sold indulgences by the truckload, leading Martin Luther to rebel against papal authority. Leo later condemned and excommunicated Luther. Ironically, Henry VIII was also eventually excommunicated by Pope Clement VII!

Answer: Joseph Roberts

The country of Liberia was founded by former American slaves. Now, while the descendants of those American slaves make up a mere 5 percent of the population, they still dominate the intellectual and ruling class.

Answer: Babur

Babur was the great-grandson of the great Mongol conqueror Tamerlane. His Mogul dynasty in India lasted until 1858.

Answer: Crimean

Although an inconclusive battle, it was forever immortalized in Tennyson's poem "Charge of the Light Brigade".
9. Who was the French revolutionist and member of the Convention who was murdered in 1793 by Charlotte Corday?

Answer: Jean Paul Marat

Marat's death was also forever immortalized in the beautiful painting "Death of Marat" by Jacques Louis David which can be viewed in Brussels...it's worth the visit!
10. In 1973, a coup ended the presidency of which Chilean left-wing politician?

Answer: Salvador Allende

He failed to solve Chile's economic problems during his presidency which began in 1970. The army staged the coup in 1973, backed by the CIA, which left Allende and many of his supporters dead. Augusto Pinochet began his military rule following this coup.
