DOUBLEDAY commanded the field when Reynolds was killed by a sniper until HOWARD, who outranked Doubleday, took the field with his corps. HANCOCK, with special orders from Meade, commanded the field which he soon relinquished when he left the field to report the days actions to Meade. SLOCUM, who outranked Howard, approached Gettysburg in the evening hours which gave him command of the field until later that night, when MEADE took command.
