Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Battle of the Boyne was part of an ostensibly religious war for Ireland. James II landed in Ireland with 25,000 men to expand the influence of which religion?

Answer: Catholicism

James II was a staunch Roman Catholic, and it was in Ireland where there was most sympathy for James's Jacobites.
2. William III's army attempted to subdue the Jacobites early on with little success, but then William himself took charge of the army and marched towards which Irish city?

Answer: Dublin

William advanced south towards Dublin and the Jacobite forces retreated before him. It was only when they reached the River Boyne that they decided to make a stand.
3. Williams army outnumbered the Jacobites. How many troops did William have under his command?

Answer: 36,000

The 36,000 troops of William's army far outnumbered the Jacobites 25,000. However, the Jacobites did possess well trained elite French infantry loaned to him by king Louis XIV of France.
4. The Jacobites chose to make a stand at a small village on the Boyne. What was it called?

Answer: Oldbridge

Oldbridge was only a small village with 5 or 6 buildings. The night before the battle it was evacuated. It took a battering from William's 6-pounder guns. The church was badly damaged, as were several houses.
5. William succeded in convincing James that the real attack was coming from away to his right.

Answer: True

William sent 10,000 troops away to another crossing point in the river on the Jacobites exposed left flank. James thought this was the real attack and dispatched two thirds of his forces (including his best French infantry regiments) 4 miles to the southwest of the battle. They would take no part in the fighting.
6. Once Williams troops had secured Oldbridge, he threw more reinforcments across the river on his left flank. How many regiments did he send?

Answer: 5

William sent across two Huguenot regiments, two English regiments and a Dutch regiment to support his troops already on the opposite bank. This meant that James had to reform his whole battle line to counter this new threat.
7. Once the Jacobites had reformed, James launched a violent counter-thrust against William's troops holding Oldbridge. He sent 1,000 cavalry, but who led the charge?

Answer: Duke of Berwick

The cavalry launched 3 wild counter-attacks but the Dutch Blue Guards formed square and held firm. Upon the arrival of reinforcments in the form of 3 Irish Protestant regiments to support the Blue Guards, the cavalry charge was abandoned.
8. After the cavalry charge was called off, the Jacobites retreated up the hill of Donore. What did they do there?

Answer: Made a last ditch stand

The Jacobites made a last ditch attempt to regain control of the battle but by this point mass retreat was inevitable. What was left of the Jacobite army fled along the road to Duleek.
9. The Jacobites were given an extra half an hour to get away. Why was this?

Answer: The Jacobite cavalry fought a rearguard action

The Jacobite cavalry charged Williams army again and again to buy time for the rest of the Jacobites to get away. They took heavy casualties.
10. Where did James flee to after the battle?

Answer: France

After the battle, James rode to Dublin where he hid before getting a ship to France 3 weeks later. The Jacobites kept up the fight for a Roman Catholic Britain but they were finally defeated 50 years later at the Battle of Culloden.
