Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which dialect of ancient Greek was spoken in the region surrounding Athens?

Answer: Attic

Different dialects of Greek were spoken in the various parts of ancient Greece: Ionic was spoken in Asia Minor (now modern-day Turkey), Doric was mostly spoke in the Peloponnesian region and on the islands of Rhodes and Crete, and Corinithian was a sub-dialect of Doric.
2. To which God did the oracles at Delphi pray?

Answer: Apollo

In Greek mythology Apollo is the god of the sun and also has power over healing, and also over the plague. He is the son of Zeus and Leto, as well as the twin brother of Artemis, a goddess of the moon. (Selene, also a Greek goddess of the moon, is often conflated with Artemis).
3. Everyone knows Dionysus, the god of wine (among other things). Some creatures knew him especially well, though. Who were his party buddies?

Answer: Satyrs

These half-man, half-goat creatures were known as 'party animals', as well as being closely associated with the penis.
4. Which of these is NOT one of the three 'unities' that Aristotle mentioned in connection with drama?

Answer: Unity of character

The three unities originated in ancient Greece, and Aristotle was insisted on their importance. 'Unity of action' means that there is only one major plot, with any sub-plot always clearly relating back to the main plot; 'unity of time' requires (although there is some controversy over what he exactly meant) that a play should not take place over a long period of time. 'Unity of place' means that a play should not involve movement over long distances.

It was thought that failure to adhere to the unities - for example, a plot extending over a lifetime - would make a drama implausible.

The unities (as reinterpreted by various French theorists) were foundations upon which French classical theatre (of the period c. 1650-1700 onwards) was based.
5. In which century BCE did the Athenians suffer a terrible plague?

Answer: 400s

This plague occurred during the Peloponnesian war (431-404 BCE), which was fought against the warrior city state of Sparta. The plague lasted approximately four years, from 430-426 BCE. Syptoms included coughing up blood, headaches, rashes, fevers, stomach cramps, frequent vomiting, diarrhea (if you get to live that long), and uncontrollable thirst. People generally died on the seventh or eight day after having contracted the disease.
6. In what modern day country is the ancient region of Asia Minor?

Answer: Turkey

Asia Minor is most famous, among other things, for the city of Troy. The war between Greece and this city was told by Homer in the "Iliad". You may know the story through "The Odyssey", or through the movie "Troy" with Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom.
7. The Parthenon in Athens is one of the most recognizable Greek symbols, but the building was not always as it is known today. In what year was the original temple to Athena destroyed?

Answer: 480 BCE

This was destroyed by the Persians, who were often at war with the Greeks in ancient times. The Parthenon as we know it today has only been kept in such good condition because it has changed religions over the years. In the 6th century AD, it was converted into a Christian church, and then it was changed again with the rule of the Ottoman empire to a Muslim mosque, until Turkish rule ended, when it became a historical landmark.
8. Here is a question for any of you sports fans out there: In what year did the first recorded Olympics take place?

Answer: 776 BCE

This year is simply the first ever recorded Olympic games, though there is evidence to show that the Olympics were occurring as far back as the 13th century BCE.
9. Ancient Greece is known for it amazing dramatic productions. One theatre is still in very good condition, and has such good acoustics, that if you stand in the middle of the stage, people at the very back of the large outdoor theatre can hear you clearly, without the use of amplification. (Hint: This city also held one of the most celebrated healing centres of the ancient world).

Answer: Epidaurus

This is perfectly true. I went there a few years ago, and you could hear the person on the stage, right at the top of the stadium.
10. From which God or demi-god did the Spartans believe that they were descended?

Answer: Heracles

This could explain why they were so strong in their militaristic measures! I hope you enjoyed this quiz!
