Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Nick' is better known as?

Answer: Kawasaki Ki-45 Toryu

Oddly enough, despite being designed as a long-range escort fighter, the Ki-45 never operated as one. It excelled, howver, as a night fighter, claiming 7 victories over the American B-29 bomber on the night of June 15 1944.
2. This single engine bomber went by the name of 'Jill'. What was her official designation?

Answer: Nakajima B6N Tenzan

This torpedo bomber was designed to replace the B5N 'Kate', which had excelled itself throughout the earlier battles of the Pacific conflict.
3. 'Zeke' is better known as what infamous Japanese fighter plane?

Answer: Mitsubishi A6M Zero-Sen

The most famous Japanese fighter plane of World War 2, the 'Zero' earned a reputation early in the war for being seemingly invincible. After Midway though, this changed dramatically.
4. 'Val' may sound a classy gal, but the Allies thought differently. What was her official name?

Answer: Aichi D3A

The key Japanese dive-bomber of the Pacific conflict, the D3A earned its keep at Pearl Harbour.
5. 'Lily'. This twin engine bomber was better known as?

Answer: Kawasaki Ki-48

A four-seat light bomber for the Japanese armed forces. 1,977 were produced before production ceased in 1944.
6. 'Betty'. This famous girl was officially designated as the what?

Answer: Mitsubishi G4M

The most famous Japanese bomber of WW2. Allied pilots nick-named it 'the one shot lighter' due to its tendency to catch fire once fired upon.
7. 'Baka'. This aircraft, which came into operation late in the war, was designated the _______?

Answer: Yokosuka MXY-7 Ohka

This was the world's first - and possibly only - purpose-designed suicide plane. Once carried to the target, and the pilot ignited the rocket engine, they were virtually unstoppable, and gave its victims no warning of an attack.
8. 'Ann'. Not a very well known girl, but just as important as the rest. What was her official name?

Answer: Mitsubishi Ki-30

Under the modernisation programe that Japan initiated in the 1930s, this was one of the first monoplane bombers that the armed forces ordered. They served well until 1941, when they were classed as obsolete.
9. 'Sally'. This twin engine bomber was officially designated what?

Answer: Mitsubishi Ki-21

Serving throughout the 'Chinese incident' before WW2, the Ki-21 was gradually upgunned more and more before being faded out of front line service from 1943 onwards.
10. 'Tabby'. A tricky last one. Which of these aircraft went by this name?

Answer: Douglas C-47 Dakota

Got you there, did I? Believe it or not, the Japanese actually ordered several DC3s from the USA before the war. Nakajima built 571 during the war, and they were designated the L2D. Naturally, they saw very little service.
