Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first thing I found in the junk drawer was a miniature car inside a small box. What was the name of this die-cast toy first bought to us in the 1950s?

Answer: Matchbox

The Matchbox series of toys first came to our shelves in 1953, and were very similar to Corgi, Dinky and Hot Wheels toys. The first model was of a miniature Queen Elizabeth II's coronation coach, but since then, we have seen model cars, tipper trucks and aeroplanes.

The original company which owned Matchbox was called Lesney Products, and was founded by three men, Leslie Smith, Rodney Smith and John "Jack" Odell. It was Jack's daughter who asked her father to design a small toy she could take to school that could fit in a matchbox.
2. An old (British) coin I found in the bottom of the drawer was first minted in the same year that we saw the births of which famous people?

Answer: Jessica Biel, Kirsten Dunst and Anne Hathaway

Jessica Biel, Kirsten Dunst and Anne Hathaway were all born in 1982. These actresses first came to prominence in the 1990s and 2000s, with their films "Elizabethtown" (2005), "Interview with the Vampire" (1994) and "The Princess Diaries" (2001), listed respectively. Jennifer Garner, Cameron Diaz and Ben Affleck were born in 1972. Orlando Bloom, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Maggie Gyllenhaal were born in 1977. 3. The next item I retrieved from the drawer was an old book which featured the story of a boat. Curious about the boat, I discovered the name was originally going to be used by the people who bought us a coffee house, but renamed it to Starbucks. What was its name?

Answer: Pequod

Pequod was the name of the boat in the 1851 novel "Moby Dick" written by Herman Melville. The story told of Ismael, a young sailor who joined a whaling ship (Pequod) just off Nantucket. The ship's captain was called Ahab, and his chief mate was Starbuck. Starbucks coffee company was founded in 1971 by Jerry Baldwin, Gordon Bowker and Zev Siegl. They initially thought to call the company Pequod but changed it to Starbucks. According to their website, "the name, inspired by Moby Dick, evoked the romance of the high seas and the seafaring tradition of the early coffee traders."
4. I found a pile of cassette tapes in the drawer. Popular in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, the leading brand seen worldwide was called TDK. What does this acronym stand for?

Answer: Tokyo Denkikagaku Kogyo

Tokyo Denkikagaku Kogyo (Tokyo Electronics and Chemicals) was first founded in Japan in 1935, but it was not until 1966 when they introduced compact cassettes. The cassette contained a reel of magnetically coated plastic tape. Inserted into a cassette player, the tape rubbed against the playback head which produced an electromagnet pulse, and this in turn was amplified to its speakers.
5. The next item I pulled out of the drawer was an assortment of old dress-making patterns. Which of these company names would NOT be in the pile?

Answer: Butterkist

Butterkist is a type of popcorn. Better known manufacturers of dress-making patterns included Butterick, Vogue, Simplicity and McCall's. Ebenezer Butterick of The Butterick Company sold his first template made out of cardboard in 1863. Nowadays, the pack comes with light weight paper which has been pre-cut into different shaped templates.

The material is pinned against each template, cut out, and then sewn together according to an enclosed set of instructions.
6. Brought into production during the late 1970s, what was the name of this musical instrument?

By tapping a stylus pen against the metal keyboard, a sound emitted which was similar to a high pitched organ. Around three million were sold between 1968 and 1975. Musicians of note who included stylophone music in their songs were David Bowie, Marilyn Manson and Jean Michel Jarre.

Answer: Monopoly

Answer: National Registration Day

The National Registration Act 1939 was introduced to make British householders complete a form which showed who lived in their house. Ration books and identity cards were then issued to each person. German submarines were sent to try and stop imports coming by boat to British docks.

As a fair way of rationing food, ration books were handed in and stamped by the shopkeeper each time something was purchased. This included tea, sugar, eggs and meat. Many other articles, including clothing, were added to the list in the course of World War Two.
9. Danish fisherman and woodcutter Thomas Dam created which toy in 1959?

Answer: Troll doll

Trolls were small creatures from Norse and Scandinavian folklore. Believed to live in caves or up mountains, they were either known as quiet bumbling creatures, or a little more terrifying, such as in the fairy-tale "Three Billy Goats Gruff". The troll dolls that Thomas Dam created were small plump figurines made of plastic with long brightly coloured hair.
10. The last piece of junk I found in the drawer was this strange item which belonged to old Grandma Phillips. What is it?

Answer: Mandoline

The mandolin was a musical instrument, but the similarly spelt mandoline was an item used in the kitchen to slice food such as cheese or carrots. The image shown is an old fashioned mandoline as new varieties are made from plastic and come with different attachments. It is believed the first recorded mandoline was used in the court of Pope Pius VI during the 16th century.
