Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who drew up the original plans for D-day?

Answer: Lieutenant-General Frederick Morgan

Although Morgan was the head of the initial planning, he knew that the final leader would have to be American. This was due to the fact that the American troops would make up 75% of the ground forces.
2. What position did Lieutenant-General Frederick Morgan hold within the D-Day planning commitee?

Answer: Chief of Staff to the Supreme Allied Commander

He made and named the post for himself and named it COSSAC for short. He was later succeeded by Lieutenant-General Walter Bedell Smith, when Eisenhower became Supreme Allied Commander; Morgan became Smith's deputy.
3. The D-Day planners send out an appeal to British public requesting their pre-war postcards and photographs of the French coastline?

Answer: Yes

They put a broadcast over the BBC urging people to unearth their photographs and postcards of not only France but all of the coast up to Norway. This was so they could decide which beaches were easy to defend or attack. Moreover, the making the appeal in such general terms they revealed nothing about their actual plans.
4. What was the original planned date for D-Day?

Answer: 1st May 1944

This date was chosen in May 1943 by US and British commanders, but COSSAC Morgan knew he needed longer to get all his supplies together. That is why the landings took place on the 6th June.
5. How many men took part in the first hours of D-Day?

Answer: 156,000

Of these 156,000 men, 18,000 were paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines before the seaborne invasion began.
6. Instead of attacking and capturing well defended ports, they decided to tow two prefabricated harbours across the channel. What were these harbours code-named?

Answer: Mulberries

Each one of these Mulberries consisted of 73 concrete blocks and were the size of the port of Dover! One Mulberry would support the British and Canadian troops, the other the American troops.
7. Every document concerning D-Day was stamped with this word. What was it?

Answer: BIGOT

They chose the word BIGOT because they beleived that no-one would go around bragging about something with a classification BIGOT.
8. A double agent, played a important role in helping the Allies achieve a foothold in Normandy. What was his spy name according to MI5?

Answer: Garbo

Garbo, as he was known by MI5, told the Germans that the Allies intended to attack in Norway and Pas de Calais. While feeding the Germans snippets of the truth he also delivered big, but plausible lies. The Germans 'bought' them.
9. In the run up to D-Day a 'dummy' army was set up in the Dover area to draw attention away from the real plan?

Answer: True

This fake army was set up in the Dover area and consisted of tanks and aeroplanes that were made out of cloth and wood. How were the Germans to know that if they were 15,000 feet up in the air?
10. The Merville battery was a formidable gun overlooking Sword beach, and who had the task of knocking it out?

Answer: British 6th Airborne Division

If the British 6th Airborne Division did not achieve its task of destroying the Merville Battery by 5.30Am the HMS Azalea was to open fire on it, no matter who was in the vicinity. They achieved their objective amid very heavy casualties.
