Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What products did Hazel Bishop make?

Answer: Cosmetics

Hazel Bishop (1906-1998), developed and marketed a "kissable lipstick" in the early 1950s. She was a Standard Oil chemist during World War II, working on a special fuel for airplanes. At night she experimented to end lipstick stains and successfully produced a smear-proof, long-lasting lipstick, and formed Hazel Bishop, Inc.
2. What product did Speedy pitch?

Answer: Alka-Seltzer

Between 1953 and 1964, Speedy appeared in 212 commercials with his Alka-Seltzer tablet body with hat and "effervescent" wand. Dick Beals provided Speedy's voice, after hundreds of actors and actresses were auditioned.
3. What prize was offered in a box of Quaker Oats Shredded Wheat?

Answer: land

Quaker Oats sponsored the popular kids show "Sergeant Preston of the Yukon". Purchasers of a box of cereal received a deed to one square inch of land in the Yukon Territory. Beginning in January 1954, this advertising gimmick sold over 21 million boxes of Quaker Oats products.
4. Where would you use "Butch Wax"?

Answer: hair

The waxy substance was perfect for the "flat-top" haircut of the 50's, making the hair stand straight up.
5. What did you have to send in to receive a Captain Midnight decoder ring?

Answer: Ovaltine seal

Ovaltine, a chocolate flavored milk mix, was a sponsor of the children's favorite, "Captain Midnight". Before the last Ovaltine commercial, kids were urged to go get their rings to receive a secret message.
6. What is "Psssssst!"?

Answer: Shampoo

The Clairol dry shampoo product can still be purchased today for those who want to wash their hair without water, anytime, anywhere.
7. What is Ipana?

Answer: Toothpaste

Bucky Beaver was the animated spokesperson for the Bristol Meyer product. One of his jingles went: "Brusha, brusha, brusha. Here's the new Ipana with a brand new flavor. It's dandy for your
te-e-e-e-eth."
8. What was an Edsel?

Answer: Automobile

The oval shaped grill of the Ford Edsel was one of the biggest mistakes in automotive manufacturing history. Named for one of Henry Ford's sons, the poor selling car almost bankrupted Ford Motor Company.
9. What did Betty Furness hawk on television?

Answer: Westinghouse appliances

Elizabeth Mary Furness (1916-1994) was a model and actress with more than thirty motion pictures. She became a highly paid spokesperson for Westinghouse, and later became involved in consumer affairs.
10. What was a 78?

Answer: Record

In the 1950s most record players sold had three speed settings: 33 1/3 rpm, 45 rpm and 78 rpm. The 78s faded during the 50s (they only held 4 or 5 minutes of music per side), with most albums being at 33 1/3 and singles at 45 rpms

78 rpm had been the standard speed of the mechanical, "wind-up" gramophones.
