This intensified the American public's awareness and led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts.

"Patton" won a total of eight Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. Characterizing the Academy Awards competition between actors as an unfair "meat parade", George C. Scott refused his Award.

The 1968 Democratic Party Convention in Chicago was disrupted by street riots and acts of police brutality. A group of young men, including Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin and Jane Fonda's future husband, Tom Hayden, were charged with and tried for inciting the destructive riots.

They were found guilty by a jury and sentenced to prison in February, 1970. An appellate court later reversed their convictions.

It wasn't until 1982 that someone tampered with Tylenol causing several deaths in the Chicago area.
