Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How old was Publius Cornelius Scipio when he was given command of the Roman armies in Spain ?

Answer: 25

Young Scipio offered himself for the appointment to Spain (where his father and uncle had been killed in battle) when the senior statesman and magistrates declined. He was well below the traditional age for election to the praetorship or consulship, which usually were required to command an army.

He went on to expel the Carthaginians from Spain and to defeat the great Hannibal gaining the cognomen "Africanus". Scipio was arguably the greatest of all Roman captains.
2. Who was elected consul for 88 BC and then given command of the army to be sent against Mithridates the King of Pontus who had occupied Asia and Greece?

Answer: Lucius Cornelius Sulla

Superseded by political enemies, Sulla marched on Rome to confirm his command, then crossing the Adriatic to Greece, defeated Mithridates' armies at Chaeronea and Orchomenus in Boeotia, besieged and took Athens, and drove the king out of Europe.
3. Consul three times, this general defeated the Samnites at the battle of Aquilona in 293 BC, crushed the Gallic Senones in 284 BC and drove King Pyrrhus from Italy at the battle of Beneventum in 275 BC.

Answer: Manius Curius Dentatus

Manius Curius was known for his upright character. When offered a bribe by the Samnites he said: "It is better to conquer those who possess gold than to possess it yourself."
4. What town was the home of Gaius Marius, victor over Jugurtha of Numidia, the Germanic Cimbri and Teutones, and seven times consul?

Answer: Arpinum

Marius was an outsider in Roman politics and broke in as a protégé of the Caecilii Metelii clan. His fellow townsman Marcus Tullius Cicero would also leave his mark on Roman history.
5. Publius Cornelius Scipio the younger, conquered two cities that had defied the power of Rome for decades, what were the cities Scipio conquered in 146 and 133 BCE?

Answer: Carthage and Numantia

Scipio was married to Sempronia, granddaughter of Scipio Africanus the elder (his adoptive grandfather) and sister of the Gracchi (thier mother was Scipio's daughter). Scipio and Sempronia apparently never got along, and dislike turned to hatred when Scipio condoned (and possibly encouraged) the murder of her brother Tiberius by their mutual cousin Scipio Nasica. Shortly thereafter Scipio died suddenly at the age of 45. Did Sempronia kill him?
6. The first Roman to triumph for a naval victory, this commander defeated the Carthaginian fleet at the battle of Mylae in 260 BC.

Answer: Gaius Duilius

Livy credits Duilius with inventing the boarding-bridge-grapnel called the "corvus" which turned a sea fight into a land battle. Appius gave the sacred chickens the deep six off Sicily when they gave a bad omen and was defeated, Scipio Asina got his cognomen by being surprised and defeated in the Lipari Islands, both in the First Punic War. Arrius was Ben Hur's adoptive father.
7. Known as "Rome's Sword" this general was the last man to win the "spolia opima" for killing an enemy chieftain in single combat. He also foiled Hannibal at Nola in 216-215 BC, took Casilinum in 214, and besieged and conquered Syracuse in 213-212 BC.

Answer: Marcus Claudius Marcellus

Marcellus killed the chief of the Insubrian Gauls at the battle of Clastidinum in 222 BC. When he was killed in a skirmish in 208 BC, Hannibal had the body cremated with all honors and returned Marcellus' son.
8. Marcus Furius Camillus was one of Rome's greatest heroes. He conquered Veii and Falerii, and drove out the Gauls after they took Rome in 390BC. Which of the following is also true of Camillus?

Answer: He never held the consulship

Six times military tribune with consular powers, five times dictator and four times "triumphator" Camillus was never consul. As a prominent patrician he was unpopular with the plebeians in spite of his victories, and was never elected to the highest office.
9. Lucius Aemilius Paulus defeated and captured King Perseus of Macedonia at the battle of Pydna in 168 BCE, and was infamous for the treacherous pillage and enslavement of Epirus. Paulus was the son of the consul killed at Cannae in 216, and his own son was also a great commander. What did that son accomplish?

Answer: Conquered Carthage

Aemilius Paulus had two sons by his first wife and two by his second. With the family line apparently assured he allowed his two eldest sons to be adopted by the most prominent families in Rome. One was adopted by the descendant of Fabius Maximus the "cunctator", and the other by the son of the great Scipio Africanus.

This son, Publius Cornelius Scipio Aemilianus, was the conqueror of Carthage. Unfortunately for Paulus, his younger sons both died within days of his triumph over Macedon, extinguishing his line. Was it the revenge of the gods for the sack of Epirus?
10. Who defeated the Macedonians at the battle of Cynocephalae and king Nabis of Sparta in 197 BC?

Answer: Titus Quinctius Flamininus

At the Isthmian games at Corinth in 196, Flamininus declared all the Greeks of Europe and Asia free to live under their own laws.
11. Lucius Licinius Lucullus was Sulla's favorite subordinate. He served under him in the Social War, was his quaestor in 88 BC and was the only officer to support him in his march on Rome. Later he served Sulla as proquaestor, raising ships, auxiliaries and money in the cities of the East. After his consulship in 74 BC, Lucullus drove the irrepressible Mithridates from his kingdom, and defeated king Tigranes of Armenia. What less than "savory" reputation did Lucullus acquire after his retirement?

Answer: He was an eminent gourmet

Once, when he was to dine alone and a slave suggested a light supper, Lucullus is said to have replied: "Do you not know that tonight Lucullus dines with Lucullus?" and ordered that a sumptuous feast be prepared.
12. Three Romans of this name "devoted" their lives to the gods and sacrificed themselves for their country. The grandfather died in battle against the Latins at the battle of Veseris in 340BC, the father died as consul commanding the Roman army against the Samnites at the battle of Sentinium in 295 BC, and the son was killed fighting Pyrrhus at Asculum in 279 BC. Who was it?

Answer: Publius Decius Mus

Though there were innumerable important Fabii and Metelli, none were famous for the "devotio". Maximus Decimus Meridus was the Roman general in the movie "Gladiator".
13. Quintus Sertorius kept the Marian cause alive in Spain for years after it was destroyed in Italy, defeating Sulla's best generals including Metellus Pius and Pompey the Great. In the end he fell to an assassin's knife. Sertorius had a physical attribute that caused the Spanish to compare him to the great Hannibal, what was it?

Answer: He had lost an eye

Hannibal also had lost an eye. Both were able to mold foreign peoples into powerful armies that defied the power of Rome.
14. How long did it take for Pompey to clear the pirates from the Western Mediterranean?

Answer: 40 days

According to Plutarch, Pompeys' squadrons swept the sea clean in 40 days, allowing him to besiege and take the pirate strongholds in Cilicia, Crete and Pamphylia. Later he superseded Lucullus and put an end to the ubiquitous Mithridates of Pontus
15. What Gallic tribes' attempted migration triggered Gaius Julius Caesar's first intervention in Gaul?

Answer: Helvetii

After the Helvetii were defeated and sent back home, the Sequani asked the Roman commander to help them deal with their erstwhile ally Ariovistus and his Germans.
