Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In May 2004 which English soccer team won the Premier Division without being beaten in a league match?

Answer: Arsenal

Arsenal became the first team to go through a whole season unbeaten since Preston in 1888/89. They beat Leicester 2-1 in their final game after being a goal behind at half-time.
2. In May 2004 the Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott increased speculation that the Cabinet were preparing for what?

Answer: Tony Blair resigning as Prime MInister

Apparently Cabinet Ministers were talking over the future post-Blair. Also, in the last part of the month Mr Blair was attacked from the gallery in the House of Commons when powder was thrown at him. The members of the public responsible were later fined by a Court.

This was seen as a massive security slip-up and the cause of much re-thinking on security. Mr Blair certainly then had his enemies and probably not just amongst the public, but also within his own cabinet.
3. In May 2004 England and Wales saw the highest annual rise in two decades in what according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS)?

Answer: The birth rate

Apparently birth rates were up 4% to 621,469. This was the highest rise since 1979.
4. Someone living in England came fifth in the Eurovision Song Contest in May 2004?

Answer: True

Lisa Andreas, aged 16 and living in Gillingham in Kent came fifth with the entry for Cyprus. She sang "Stronger Every Minute". The winning country was the Ukraine. Now there was a time that our British song writers could produce the goods at this level and above. They are now better at getting things right in other countries. Unlike 2003 we at least did get some points in 2004!
5. Did Sonia Gandhi become Prime Minister of India in May 2004?

Answer: No

In fact Manmohan Singh became Prime Minister of India in May 2004. Sonia Gandhi was elected, but refused to take up the position. Apparently she listened to her "inner voice" according to reports and decided it was not for her. What a breath of fresh air to hear that in England: if a few of our politicians listened to their inner voices we would not have ended up as we have, would we?
6. Who won the soccer F.A. Cup at the Millennium Stadium in May 2004?

Answer: Manchester United

Manchester United beat Millwall 3-0 with Ruud van Nistelroy scoring two goals in a fairly predictable cup final.
7. How did former circuit judge David Selwood make a name for himself in June 2004?

Answer: He pleaded guilty to child pornography charges

This 69 year old newly retired judge pleaded guilty at Bow Street Magistrates court to 13 counts relating to child pornography. Until shortly before being charged he had actually sat and heard cases relating to such offences and then passsed sentence! We can only ask who selects these people and where they get them from?
8. Which 60th anniversary was celebrated on 6 June 2004?

Answer: The D-Day landings

On 6th June 1944 and amid huge casualties the allies landed in France and together with the Soviet armed forces finally moved in to remove Hitler from Europe.
9. What incredible sight not seen since 1882 was witnessed in early June 2004?

Answer: The planet Venus moved across the sun.

With clear skies the tiny spot of Venus moved slowly across the sun and created something no one alive on earth today would have seen before.
10. Which former American President died in early June 2004?

Answer: Ronald Reagan

Often credited with ending the Cold War, Ronald Reagan died after a long illness at the age of 93.
11. In June 2004 the Bank of England raised the interest rate by 0.25% - to what figure?

Answer: 4.5%

With two more increases predicted and the next possibly in August 2004 the Bank was aiming to try and control inflation and borrowing in the country. Predictions were being made that house prices (at a massive all time high) might start to fall.
12. Having been elected to the European Parliament in June 2004 what did ex-TV-presenter Robert Kilroy-Silk say that he planned to do?

Answer: Wreck the European Parliament

Elected for the UK Independence Party that wants Britain out of Europe Kilroy-Silk said in a media interview that he would do this wrecking. He wants to show up the corruption and waste involved in this layer of international government. The UK Independence Party stood and were elected not only to the European Parliament, but also to the London Assembly and even stood a candidate to be the London Mayor. Strangely they want to abolish not just the the European Union (or at least withdraw the UK from it), but they also want to abolish the London Assembly and the Mayor! How very quaint and English you may think!
13. Which of the following persons did not stand to be elected as London Mayor in June 2004?

Answer: Nicky Gavron

In fact Nicky Gavron should have been and was selected to be the Labour Party candidate for Mayor. When the Labour Party realized that Ken Livingstone would beat them as an independent candidate she stood down as Ken was invited back into the Party (that had dismissed him as a member for standing against them for Mayor in 2000). Ken Livingstone was elected again in a fairly predictable contest with the Conservative Steven Norris. Labour's vote collapsed elsewhere to all time record lows. Now weren't the Labour Party the party that tried "all women" shortlists recently? Nicky Gavron will have her thoughts about that!
14. In June 2004 what was the score in the England v France soccer match that opened their campaign in the Euro-2004 tournament in Portugal?

Answer: England 1-2 France

England were winning 1-0 with about two minutes to go when Zidane scored two goals for France (the second being a penalty). Adding to England's tale of woe, David Beckham missed a penalty when England were winning. Now things looked so good for England in 1966 when they won the World Cup. Something seems to have gone badly wrong since then, doesn't it? England has been cursed ever since that "off the bar" decision was made.
15. In June 2004 a City of London P.A. (Private Assistant) called Joyti De-Laurey was jailed for stealing how much money from her employer?

Answer: Just over £4 million

She was sent to prison for 7 years for stealing £4.3 million pounds.
