Edward the Confessor (1042 -1066) was responsible for the first collection of Crown Jewels. They were initially kept in Westminster Abbey until they were nearly stolen. They were then moved to the Tower of London.
2. Which crown is the official coronation crown?

Answer: St Edward's Crown

St Edward's Crown is used to crown a new monarch. It was first used in 1661 as the coronation crown of Charles II.
However, Queen Victoria and Edward VII were not crowned with St. Edward's Crown as it so heavy (2,155g) and used the Imperial State Crown (910g).
The Imperial Crown of India is stored alongside the Crown Jewels but is not a part of them.

The Cullinan diamond is also known as the Star of Africa. Found in 1905, it originally weighed 3,106.75 carats. It was cut into nine main pieces. The largest piece is mounted in the Sceptre with the Cross (Cullinan I) and the next largest (Cullinan II) in the Imperial State crown.

It was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan who owned the diamond mine in South Africa where it was found.

After the death of her husband, Queen Victoria only wore widow's weeds in public. She refused to wear the Imperial State Crown as it was too heavy. The small diamond crown was made to allow her to wear her mourning veil.
