Answer: Judith Henry

Judith was the wife of Dr. Isaac Henry who was once a surgeon's mate on the frigate Constellation. At the time of the battle she was the resident of the house along with her daughter Ellen, son John, and a black servant named Lucy Griffith. She was killed during the battle.
2. What was a Sherman Sentinel?

Answer: Blackened Chimney

When Gen. Sherman waged war on unarmed civilians he thought it would shorten the war and save lives of his soldiers. Usually when his troops left a farm after looting the house, they took the farm animals and destroyed any equipment that might be used for farming or manufacturing, so that often all that remained was a blackened chimney.
3. How many bugle calls could be sounded in a single day that a soldier might hear?

Answer: 19

The first of 19 calls would be "Assembly of Buglers" which was sounded at 5:00A.M. in the summer 6:00A.M. in the winter. An example of the other calls were "Drill Call", "Dinner Call", "Water Call", with "Taps" being the final call of the day at 10:00P.M.. Another set of "Calls" was used in battle with regulated the activities of the units.

Belmont, Missouri saw CSA troops led by Gen. Pillow clash with Union troops led by U. S. Grant. This was Grant's first Civil War battle.

He belonged to the Ambulance Corps which was established as a regular Army Unit with the passage of the Ambulance Corps Act on March 11, 1864. It gave the Medical Department the right to train and examine men for duty.

At the CSA convention in Montgomery, Ala. Toombs got drunk which unsettled many state representatives. Pres. Jefferson appointed him Sec. of State but he kept the job only a few months. In July 1861 he was appointed a Brig. Gen. in command of a Georgia brigade.

Not being promoted as he felt he should have been, he resigned his commission and spent the rest of the war harassing the government.

Answer: Loulsiana

It was composed of wealthy and prominent men from New Orleans. It was first organized in 1838 and fought in the Mexican War. It was accepted into the CSA Army in May 1861 and went to Virginia and took part in the Battle of 1st Manassas/Bull Run. It distinguished itself at the battle of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville.

Answer: 16,000

At the start of the war only about 16,000 men made up the U.S. Army. Ninety percent of the men were divided into 10 infantry, five mounted, and four artillery regiments. Of the 2,000,000 men who saw service in the Union army only about 67,000 were in the regular army.
9. CSA Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest was nearly captured at this battle on April 2, 1865. What battle was it?

Answer: Selma, Ala.

Union Gen. James Wilson attacked the CSA defenses with about 13,500 cavalry troops. In command of the CSA troops about 8,000 strong was Gen. Forrest. Greatly outnumbered Gen. Forrest had to retreat and barely escaped. It was reported that he killed his 30th union soldier during his escape.

It only freed slave in areas of rebellon over which he had no control. It did not free the slave in areas of the country controlled by the federal government.
