1. Many troops on both sides used specific animals as mascots, as emblems of loyalty and devotion to their cause. What was the mascot of the Wisconsin Volunteer Infanty, 8th Regiment?

Answer: eagle

The 8th chose the American eagle and nicknamed it "Old Abe." The eagle was the most recognized symbol of America. When the 8th went into battle "Old Abe" was tethered to a pole and carried by "eagle bearers" Some of the other mascots included a hawk of the 1st Massachusetts, and a wildcat joined a CSA Arkansas regiment during the battle at Shiloh.

Answer: Kernstown

The battle took place on a Sunday, a day Gen. Jackson would not even post a letter but he felt that he could beat the Union forces with an attack. He had the "Stonewall Brigade" in the center of the line under the command of Gen. Garnett. Losing many men to Union fire and out of ammunition Gen. Garnett ordered a withdrawl from its position. Gen. Jackson blamed him for the defeat and relieved him from duty and placed him under and charged him with neglect of duty.

Theodore Weld, was an evangelical Christian, who had spent two years in the south studting slavery first-hand. His wife also helped with this movement by writing a open letter to southern women urging them to influence their husbands to change their stance on slavery.

At the start of the war Pres. Lincoln was opposed to a formal agreetment between the governments of both sides on prisoner exchange. In July 1862, Union Gen. John Dix and CSA. Gen. Daniel Hill made a gentlemen's agreement that relied on mutual cooperation and trust. With Pres. Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, stories of prison camp horrors and the treatment of black soldiers when captured, the North halted all exchanges. Gen. Grant did resume prisoner exchange in January 1865 but of only disabled CSA solders.
5. Who was the first southern state to erect a monument at Gettysburg?

Answer: Virginia

In 1917 Virginia built a memorial to the sacrifices of solders from that state. The monument is that of Gen. Lee astride of Traveller, on the spot from which he watched Gen. Pickett's charge. Since then every state from the former CSA has erected a monument on the Gettysburg park site to remember their soldiers who pasticipated in the battle.

Assistant Secretary Usher of Indiana was appointed to replace him. He was a old friend of Pres. Lincoln, but spent his term trying to force the immigration of blacks or the creation of black reservations but received little support. As a stockholder in the Union Pacific RR he used his influence to move Indians out of the way of the railroad saving stockholders hugh amounts of money.

Answer: Mississippi

A controversial area of Mississippi was Jones County, where many residents remained loyal to the Union. A Jones County shoemaker named Newton Knight became angry when CSA troops confiscated his mother's horse. He set out and formed a home defense band for resistance to oppression. Followed by other's loyal to the Union they raided and destroyed supplies to aid the Union. For these exploits of him and his men the area was called "Free State of Jones."

Answer: Duryee's Zouaves

The 5th New York was named after it's first Colonel Abram Duryee, a wealthy importer from New York City. He led them into the battle of Gaines's Mills. What happened there was under heavy fire they "counted off" to realign their ranks before charging Gen. Maxey's troops.
