Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year did the Glorious Revolution take place?

Answer: 1688

James was unpopular with many because he had forced the courts to decrease restrictions on Catholics and had employed many Catholics in positions of power. This made his opponents in Parliament very angry, so James simply stopped Parliament from meeting for a time. James was unpopular in England and Scotland, but he had support in Ireland, and gathered an army there.
2. What was the revolution also known as?

Answer: The Bloodless Revolution

This is not technically a correct description because, while England was taken unopposed, there was heavy fighting in Ireland and Scotland, and there were riots (against Catholics). Ireland suffered the worst fighting anywhere, with three major battles and lots of fighting elsewhere.

This was largely because Ireland was a mainly Catholic country, so James had more support than in England and Scotland (mainly Protestant countries), and there was less support for William.
3. Who coined the term "The Glorious Revolution"?

Answer: John Hampden

The name was coined in 1689 and has been the official designation (that is, the one used in official documents and official descriptions of the event by the government and parliament of the UK) ever since.
4. What relation was William of Orange to James II?

Answer: Son-in-law

William was married to Mary, James' daughter. This connection with the royal house of England gave William credibility and was the main reason the people wanted him on the throne (in addition to the fact he was Protestant).
5. Which monarch sided with James and threatened to declare war on the Netherlands if William went through with his takeover?

Answer: Louis XIV of France

King Louis later seized all Dutch ships in French ports. However, he, like most others, were caught out by the speed of the dutch crossing, and he was anyway too busy with his war in Germany to bother much about the fleet.
6. Where was the first blood shed in the invasion?

Answer: Wincanton

It was a very small battle, with a small force from James' army defeating a party of scouts sent forward by William. About 30 people died.
7. When did James II try to escape from England?

Answer: December 11, 1688

The Queen and the Prince of Wales had escaped for France on December 9 and December 10. James tried to leave on December 11 but was captured by fishermen on the Isle of Sheppey, just off the north coast of Kent
8. Why was James able to escape again, after being caught and put under protective guard?

Answer: William ordered that he should be allowed to leave

William was not sure what to do with James. He knew that, as long as he was in the country, he would claim he was the legal King and would stir up rebellion. However, he did not want to execute James, after the uproar surrounding the execution of Charles I. James' 'escape' solved his problems, as William could now say that he was the rightful King, not James.
9. What was the name given to the Act of Parliament signed by William and Mary that became one of the crucial parts of English law?

Answer: The Bill of Rights

The Bill of Rights is still a basic component of British law. It is also part of the law in certain commonwealth countries, such as Canada. Laws in the Bill of Rights include:
-Taxes must be agreed to by Parliament
-Members of Parliament can be elected without the the sovereign interfering
-Citizens can petition the monarch for various things
and many others. There was also the Claim of Right in Scotland, which set out that William and Mary were King and Queen of Scotland, and the succession should work the same way as in England (to Mary's heirs).
10. What nickname was given to the people who believed that James and his heirs were the rightful kings?

Answer: The Jacobites

The name was derived from "Jacobus", which is the Latin for James. There were two Jacobite Rebellions (in 1715 and 1745-6). Neither of them was successful.
