In 122 Hadrian stayed in the province of Britannia, where he commissioned the construction of the famous wall named after him in order to protect the Romans from the barbarians.

Antinous, his adored and intimate male friend, drowned during a cruise on the Nile in the year 130. At the place where his beautiful beloved died Hadrian founded the city of Antinopolis. He also had him deified!

Hadrian stayed three times at Athens during his reign, but not in 127. Before he became emperor he was present in Athens in 112, since he was eponymous archon (chief magistrate) of the city that year.

He proclaimed himself emperor in Antiochia, immediately after the death of his guardian Trajan. The army agreed with it, the Senate did not. However, he managed to gain acceptance.
