Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first Roman emperor was Augustus. In which year did he get to be called "pater patriae"?

Answer: 2 BC

Getting the title "father of the country" was one of the greatest honours you could achieve in the Roman world. Due to all the things Augustus had done, he was the obvious choice for this title.
2. In 9 AD Augustus sent three legions under the command of Quinctilius Varus to conquer the Germanic tribes in the Teutoburg Forest. Which of the following was NOT one of the legions involved?

Answer: sixteenth

Those legions were slaughtered and never returned. It was one of the most devastating defeats suffered by the early Roman Empire.
3. The name of the leader of the Germanic tribes that fatal night in Teutoburg Forest was Flavus.

Answer: False

The name of that man was Arminius. Flavus was his brother. They had both served in the Roman army but Arminius rather went back to his people, the Cherusci, rather than serve the "cruel" Romans. Flavus remained a loyal and apparently trusted officer in the legions. Ironically, it was Flavus' son Italicus who would become the leader of the Cherusci after Arminius' death.
4. Augustus' daughter married Marcus Agrippa and they had three children. These three unfortunate people died one by one. In which order did they die?

Answer: Lucius, Gaius, Agrippa Postumus

Lucius died in 2 AD while travelling to Hispania. Gaius passed away in Licia two years later. Postumus died in 14 AD by the order of Tiberius or Livia, but even possibly Augustus.
5. After the failed adoption of Postumus Agrippa, Tiberius was given the office of proconsul thus making his powers:

Answer: maius et infinitum

He was practicly appointed co-ruler with Augustus and was the only heir alive at the time. He was not Augustus' first choice but Livia was surley thrilled to see her son being made an heir.
6. Livia was the wife of Augustus. After Tiberius was made an heir she was renamed. What was her new name?

Answer: Julia Augusta

Livia was driven by ambition to become empress and to make her son Tiberius emperor. There are some nasty rumours that involve her. It is said that she got rid of Lucius, Gaius and Postumus by hiring her lovers as assassins. Some even say that it she herself poisoned Augustus, so that Tiberius could become emperor.

However, there's no certain evidence which could confirm that she was the mastermind behind Tiberius' rising.
7. During the reign of Tiberius there emerged one of the key figures of that time. A man who was made prefect of the praetorians in the early years of Tiberius' reign had moved all the paetorian cohorts to Rome in 23 AD thus increasing his power. In 26 AD he persuaded the emperor to move to Capri. After that he was constantly trying to overthrow the emperor so he could take his position. Luckely for Tiberius the plot was discovered and that prefect was killed in 31 AD. What was his name?

Answer: Sejan

He was killed on the footsteps of the senate. His daughter was raped before she was murdered so that it wouldn't be a sin. (Killing a virgin was unforgivable in the Roman world). The rest of his friends and family ended similarly.
8. How did Tiberius die?

Answer: He was smothered with his pillow

On his death bed he made it clear that it was Caligula to succeed him. After putting the emperors ring on his hand, he claimed the throne. But soon after, Tiberius, who was thought to be dead, started coughing and asked for water. The praetorian prefect Macro hastly rushed into the room and smothered Tiberius.
9. How old was Caligula when he became emperor?

Answer: 25

Young, and the son of the beloved Germanicus, Caligula was expected to achieve great things for the Roman nation.
10. Caligula was assasinated in 41 AD by a group of conspirators led by Sabinus Neus.

Answer: False

Their leader was Casius Hereus. His dream was to restore the republic. His ideas perished once Claudius became emperor.
