Answer: Screw Sloop

A screw sloop is a propeller driven sloop of war. 'Screw' was the term used to refer to a propeller. (The term 'screw' in front of a ship name differentiated it from a paddle wheel driven ship). Other screw' type ships used as warships during the American Civil War were screw frigates and screw corvettes.

Answer: Philadelphia Naval Shipyard

The USS Shenandoah was built at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and launced on December 8, 1862.

Mare Island Naval Shipyard was on Mare Island, California and operated from 1854-1996.

Philadelphia Naval Shipyard operated from 1799-1965.

San Francisco Naval Shipyard operated from 1941-1994. It later became Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard followed by Treasure Island Naval Station Hunter's Point Annexe.

Longbeach Naval Shipyard operated from 1943-1997.

Answer: June 20, 1863

Shenandoah departed Philidelphia on 25 June, 1863 and after a complex history was decommissioned on October 23, 1886.

The North Atlantic Blockading Squadron was based at Hampton Roads, Virginia. It was created when the Atlantic Blockading Squadron was split into the North and South Atlantic Blockading Squadrons. After the war they merged again to become the Atlantic Squadron.

After carrying wounded men from transports to shore hospitals the USS Shenandoah joined the Union siege of Charleston, which consequently fell on 17 February, 1865. On 15 March she returned to the Philidelphia Naval Shipyard and was decommisioned on 15 April 1865, but she was recommisioned roughly seven months later.
8. How many times was the USS Shenandoah decommissioned?

Answer: 4

The first time was April 15, 1865 following the Civil War. Then on May 2, 1869 following service in South America and Asia. She was then decommissioned a third time on May 27, 1882 following service in Europe. Finally she was decommisioned on October 23, 1886 and then sold to W. T. Garratt & Company on July 30, 1887.
9. Where did the USS Shenandoah serve following the Civil War?

Answer: South America, Asia, Europe and the South Atlantic

Following the Civil War the USS Shenandoah served in the Atlantic, including the Azores and the coast of Brazil, Asia including the coast of Korea, and off Europe.

It did not specifically serve in Africa although it did at one point round the Cape of Good Hope.

It was the CSS Shenandoah who went to Australia during the Civil War for repairs.
