Answer: Farragut

His birth name was James. He was adopted by Com. David Porter. He changed his name to David in honor of his adoptive father. When he was 21 years of age he had already made four cruises to the Mediterranean and fought pirates. He also took part in the War of 1812 where he was captured. He had received his appointment to the Navy at age 9.

Answer: Mallory

Stephn Mallory assigned James Bullock to purchase ships from Europe. When he arrived to purchase the he found that completed warships could not be bought. He was later able to buy two ships from England: the CSS Florida and the CSS Alabama.

These seven ironclad gunboats were designed by Samuel Pook. They weighed about 512 tons and cost about $100,000. Of the Seven ships two were sunk. The Cairo and St.Louis was sunk by CSA torpedoes (mines) in the Yazoo river.

Answer: Battle of Hampton Roads

The CSS Virginia was a now CSA ironclad. As it entered the 8 mile-long channel at Hampton Roads it headed straight for the USS Cumberland and crashed into it opening a hole in the side, but got stuck in the process but was able to get free. Of the 376 men aboard the Cumberland, 121 died.

Answer: USS Monitor

It was designed by John Ericsson. The raft part of the ship was a flat wooden deck that sat 18 inches above the water and was covered with two layers of half-inch iron plate. The deck, and the ironclad sides were three feet below the water. The cost of the ship was $275,000 and was built in 118 days.

Answer: Franklin Buchanan

He had served 46 years in the U. S. Navy before the outbreak of the Civil War. He remained neutral in the war for 4 months before joining the CSA Navy in an administrative position as a Captain. His brother McKean, was an officer aboard the USS Congress a ship that he destroyed in the Battle of Hampton Roads.

The CSS Alabama began by destroying 10 Union whaling ships in just two weeks, then off the coast of New England captured 11 more Union ships. She also sunk the USS Hatteras in the Gulf of Mexico. During her service to the CSA, the ship never entered a CSA port.

The ship was built in 1862 at a cost of $183,000. It was designed for use in the western rivers. It had two side wheels as well as two screw propellers for propulsion. It joined the western fleet in December 1862 but was forced to surrender in February 1863.

His idea was to prevent CSA ships from entering or leaving Southern ports. The Union Navy had on 42 operational ships to do this. At the time the Union had only three suitable ships for blockade duty because most of its ships were on patrol on the seas.

Answer: Mobile Bay

It was only second to Wilmington in its amount of blockade runners who entered port. Mobile was the most strongly-defended harbor in the CSA.
