The paper was founded by John Clum, a former Indian Agent. He was the first Mayor of Tombstone and is known for having captured Geronimo peacefully in 1877.

At least 16 gunfights took place held at the Bird cage. It is still viewable today with 140 bullet holes in the walls and the actual 'bird cages' surrounding the main floor. Wyatt Earp met his third wife at the Birdcage Theater and lived with her for almost 50 years. They are both buried in California.
