Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After 53 years of relative political chaos China was restored to imperial order in 960 AD...but by which new dynasty that was firmly in control of China proper by the year 1000?

Answer: Song

The Tang dynasty had finally crumbled by 907 AD after nearly 300 years in power. Following the demise of the Tang, from 907 to 960, existed the era of the five dynasties and 10 kingdoms. The Song re-established imperial rule over all of China proper by around 960, but they were never able to regain the western territories, and in particular lost control of the routes leading towards the eastern terminus of the silk road.
2. While the various societies that historians have lumped together as the 'Mississippian cultures' dominated the area of the eastern United States, the southwest was occupied predominantly by desert farmers. Which of these groups did not co-exist within what is now the southwest United States (or northwest Mexico) around 1000 AD?

Answer: Oneota

While the Oneota resided along the northern Mississippi basin, the 'pueblo cultures' of the Anasazi, Mogollon and Hohokam could be found in what is now Arizona, New Mexico and northern Mexico. These cultures have left behind wonderful testaments to their existence in the guise of multi-roomed pueblos and fascinating rock art. Fine examples can be found at Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado, among other sites.
3. Around 1000 AD, which of these empires was the predominant power of mainland southeast Asia?

Answer: Khmer

The ancient Khmer empire, centered on what is now modern Cambodia, ruled over a large area of southeast Asia. The Khmers built their capital at Angkor and their influence radiated into what is now modern Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. You may still see the remnants of Angkor if you dare to venture into Cambodia...it may be worth the trip!
4. Certainly many of us have heard the story about Leif Ericsson (son of Eric the Red), the great Norwegian explorer who sailed west from Greenland around 1000 AD and came upon Newfoundland Island, which he called 'Vinland'. But which modern explorer led the expedition in 1963 that confirmed the existence of this Viking settlement in North America?

Answer: Helge Ingstad

Ingstad and his wife Anne Stine discovered the remains of a Viking settlement at L'Anse-aux-Meadows, northern Newfoundland, in 1963, confirming the tales of Leif Ericsson's exciting exploits to be true! By the way, did you know that Ericsson named the area 'Vinland' because he found grapes growing in the area?
5. Northern Africa was divided between two Muslim Caliphates at around 1000 AD. While northwestern Africa (essentially, modern Morocco) and southern Spain were ruled by the Umayyads, which Caliphate ruled over what is now modern Tunisia, Libya and Egypt?

Answer: Fatimid

The Tunisian Fatimid dynasty (Shi'ite) was founded in 909 by Obaidallah, a claimed descendent of one of Muhammad's daughters (Fatima). The key event in Fatimid history is the conquering of Egypt and the founding of the great Muslim city of Cairo, which occurred between 967 and 973 AD.

The Umayyads operated primarily from Córdoba, Spain, where they reigned until later in the 11th century.
6. The dominant power in central Europe at around 1000 AD was which empire that had been founded in 962 by Otto I?

Answer: Holy Roman Empire

Okay...I had to toss an easy one in there somewhere! Otto was emperor of the Germans from 936, but did not have himself crowned (by the Pope) until 962...thus the date above!
7. The Tiahuanaco and Huari empires both collapsed around the same time, approximately 1000 AD, leaving room for the rise of the Chimú Empire. All of this happened in which area of the world?

Answer: Western South America

The Tiahuanaco and Huari empires both arose in the 6th century AD and each lasted for approximately 500 years before succombing to changing weather patterns and internal strife. The Chimú, centered on their great capital at Chan Chan, took advantage of the downfall of these two great empires, and reigned along the Andean coast of South America until 1470, when they were destroyed by the Inca.
8. At approximately 1000 AD this great empire of island southeast Asia had control of the crucial Strait of Malacca...can you name it?

Answer: Srivijaya

Srivijaya existed from the 7th century until the 13th century, and was based on Sumatra, but also controlled the Malay Peninsula and parts of Java and Borneo at its greatest extent.
9. True or false: The Byzantine Empire was in control of Greece and much of modern Turkey at the year 1000 AD.

Answer: True

Believe it or not, the Byzantine Empire was still going strong at 1000 AD. It would not collapse until 1453, when the Ottoman Turks took Constantinople!
10. The dominant civilization in the central valley of Mexico was which of the following by 1000 AD?

Answer: Toltec

The Zapotec capital at Monte Albán had been sacked c. 940 AD, paving the way for the rise of the Toltecs. Eventually the Aztecs would supercede the Toltecs, probably after having assimilated their culture, during the 13th century AD.
