Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What occupation did Nostradamus hold before he was remembered as a prophet?

Answer: Apothecary

Later, he also practised medicine, though he was not properly qualified to do so.
2. Which U.S. President is famous for the phrase 'If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen'?

Answer: Harry S Truman

Truman was an interesting character to say the least. Known for his simple and straightforward thinking, he was very direct in his approach to foreign affairs.
3. During Hitler's rise to power, he had the overwhelming support of his elite guard, the SS. However, who was the chief of the SA (Sturmabteilung), later assassinated on Hitler's orders?

Answer: Ernst Roehm

As chief of the SA, Ernst Roehm was pretty much Hitler's right hand man at the beginning. However, as he became more and more powerful, commanding the loyalties of the SA, Hitler saw him as a potential threat.
4. This poet was married to Sylvia Plath before she died. Who was he?

Answer: Ted Hughes

The late poet laureate Ted Hughes enjoyed an unusual relationship with the emotionally troubled Plath.
5. What was the name of the first A-bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima?

Answer: Little Boy

An ironic name for the A-bomb which reportedly killed 60,000+ people, most of whom died upon impact, and thousands as a result of radiation. However, as the bombs merely got bigger and bigger, perhaps this name is understandable.
6. For what was Al Capone finally arrested and jailed?

Answer: Tax evasion

Funnily enough, the authorities couldn't pin anything on Capone, that is, until they looked at his accounts.
7. Which British Prime Minister passed a bill for the introduction of the London Metropolitan Police?

Answer: Robert Peel

This is why to this day the English constables are known as 'bobbies' or to be more old-fashioned, 'peelers'.
8. Who was king in exile when Oliver Cromwell was Lord Protector in England?

Answer: Charles II

Oliver Cromwell abolished the monarchy after King Charles I's death. It was the only instance when England has not had a monarch as head of state.
9. What type of commodity started a war between China and Britain, which resulted in the British acquisition of Hong Kong as a colony?

Answer: Opium

The British had been trading opium with China for a while, and the Chinese soon became addicted to it. They burnt the goods, rebelling against the trade, and this subsequently resulted in a war between the two nations. As this was during British imperialism, their technological advantages meant that in 1842, they had acquired Hong Kong as a colony until 1997.
10. During World War II, which of these countries fell to the Nazis in June 1940?

Answer: France

France eventually surrendered after Italy (led by Mussolini) backstabbed them in the South after the Nazis had done most of the work.
