Johnson set a number of other flight records before joining Britain's Air Transport Auxiliary during World War II. She died when her Airspeed Oxford aircraft crashed into the River Thames on January 5th 1941. Her body was not recovered.

Born into a Quaker family, Anthony was very much a free-thinker and questioned many of the norms of the time. She was prominent in the temperance and anti-slavery movements and published a weekly journal called "The Revolution".

Her campaigning for equal rights for women laid the foundation for the 19th Amendment of the US Constitution, which gave women the right to vote.
