Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The most famous "moving pictures" of all time may be the legendary Zapruder film of President Kennedy's assassination. To whom did Zapruder sell the pictures?

Answer: Life Magazine

If not for Zapruder's famous pictures, the truth about what happened in Dallas would undoubtedly have been even much harder to discern. As it is, the pictures provided abundant information about the details of the shooting; they also helped debunk the inane "magic bullet" theory.
2. The photograph of Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald - on national television - has been seen by millions. What happened to Ruby afterwards?

Answer: He died as a prisoner awaiting a trial date

He died in January 1967 of cancer whilst awaiting a trial date. At the time of his death he had been moved to Parkland Memorial Hospital for treatment (the same hospital in which JFK was pronounced dead).

It's tempting to include in this list the pictures of John Kennedy Jr. saluting - or the picture of LBJ being sworn in on Air Force 1 with Jackie beside him.
3. The pictures of a man on the moon for the first time captured a triumphant moment for Mankind. Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon; he and his colleagues were part of what space program?

Answer: Apollo

Armstrong and friends were members of Apollo XI. Science marches on.
4. The pictures of the Hindenburg bursting into flames are compelling. In which decade did this tragedy occur?

Answer: 1930s

1937. Equally compelling is the live commentary provided by one of the newsmen describing the events live: "Oh, the humanity ..."
5. The picture of Robert Kennedy lying in a pool of his own blood is unforgettable. Where did this occur?

Answer: Los Angeles

After winning the California primary in 1968, RFK made a short statement at an L.A. hotel - which was followed by shots and confusion. Later, the world would see pictures of RFK lying on his back, fatally wounded. (What might have happened if he had won the presidency?)
6. There is a famous photo, seen by many, of a young girl kneeling over a dead student at Kent State after the famous shooting there. Where is Kent State located?

Answer: Ohio

"Four dead in Ohio ..." Although not of huge global significance in themselves, the pictures (and events) are representative of the long agony that the Vietnam war caused within the U.S.
7. Many have seen the picture of Nixon - smiling foolishly and making a "V" sign - as he steps aboard a helicopter to leave the White House for the last time; after being forced out following Watergate. When he announced (previously, on national TV) that he would resign the presidency, what reason did he give?

Answer: Erosion of his political base

Accept responsibility and confess to sleazy tactics? No way. This picture is representative of another lengthy U.S. nightmare - Watergate. This time, the "rule of law" worked.
8. Many people have seen photos of O.J. Simpson looking at the jury (in the criminal trial) after being acquitted or trying on gloves that "didn't fit". The civil trial went differently - perhaps due to some evidence regarding his shoes. What kind were they?

Answer: Bruno Magli

The "rule of law" doesn't always work. The criminal trial fascinated the U.S. for a long while - even if it didn't have a meaningful historical impact.
9. Nothing illustrates the horrors of World War II more chillingly than the pictures that were taken by the liberating Allies of the Nazi concentration camps. Auschwitz, perhaps the most infamous, was located in Poland. Which of these other camps was also in Poland?

Answer: Treblinka

The others listed were in Germany. Nothing illustrates "man's inhumanity to man" better than the horrific pictures of mass graves and skeletal survivors.
10. The photos of the World Trade center collapsing on September 11 (and the photos of the rescue-and-removal afterwards) are powerful (to say the least). What day of the week did this happen?

Answer: Tuesday

The Age of Anxiety gave way to the Age of Terrorism - as many innocent people died.
