Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After the Battle of Seven Pines at May 31, 1862 and the wounding of the commanding general, President Jefferson Davis appointed General Robert E. Lee as leader of the Army. What was the name of the General whom Lee supplanted?

Answer: Joseph E. Johnston

At the time of Johnston's wounding the tide of the war was against the Confederacy, since Federal forces under Major General George B. McClellan had advanced almost to the gates of the Confederate capital of Richmond. With General Lee in command, things went better for the rest of 1862. McClellan was driven back 30 miles from Richmond during the climactic Seven Days' Battles (June 25-July 1), the Union Army of Virginia under John Pope was crushed at the Second Battle of Manassas (Bull Run, August 28-30), an invasion to the North was attempted and ended with the Battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam) (September 17) and the Confederates again defeated their opponents at the Battle of Fredericksburg (December 13).
2. Immediately after he was given command, General Lee reorganized his army. It was split into two wings. Command of the left wing was given to a general whose recent victories in the Shenandoah Valley had greatly uplifted Confederate morale. What was his name?

Answer: Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson

Who does not know "Stonewall" Jackson? His Valley Campaign is considered a tactical and strategic masterpiece and is being studied in military schools inside America and abroad. In the Seven Days' Battles, Jackson's performance was said to be poor. However, General Lee defended him, since he understood that poor staff work, very tough terrain, crude maps and great enemy resistance were conditions that greatly hindered Stonewall.

As history showed, Lee's confidence was not misplaced.
3. When, on November 6, 1862, the two Wings of the Army of Northern Virginia were renamed to Corps, James Longstreet's right Wing was renamed the Second Corps.

Answer: False

Longstreet's Wing was renamed the First Corps. James Longstreet's Corps has survived, in popular culture, as the anvil of Lee's army, whilst the Second, under Stonewall Jackson, is thought of as its hammer. However, at Second Manassas (Bull Run) the roles were reversed since Longstreet was the hitter and Jackson the defender. Longstreet's adherence to the defensive is blamed by some historians as the reason for the Confederates not being victorious at Gettysburg.
4. Apart from the infantry, the cavalry played a very active role at the operations of the Army of Northern Virginia. Whom did Lee appoint as commander of the Cavalry Corps when it was created?

Answer: James Ewell Brown Stuart

At first, Lee classified the cavalry as a division under the command of J.E.B. Stuart but, in later 1863, it became a Corps. As a Corps, the structure of the cavalry was six brigades in two divisions. Many CSA partisan units, like Mosby's Rangers or John Imboden's command were classified as cavalry outfits. Stuart's bold and daring style of command brought him praise from Lee who, upon hearing news of Stuart being killed, stated that he "cannot scarcely think of him without weeping".
5. After the Battle of Chancellorsville - perhaps the greatest battle General Lee fought - and the death of General Stonewall Jackson, the Army of Northern Virginia was reshuffled. One major innovation was the creation of an Artillery Reserve which could serve at any position required without being permanently attached to an infantry Corps. Who was appointed as its commander?

Answer: William N. Pendleton

Pendleton was not a military man by profession. He was an Episcopal priest. During the Civil War, he still resumed his religious practices, always preaching to his men. After the war, he maintained friendship with General Robert E. Lee and was the minister who conducted Lee's funeral.
6. The reshuffle after Chancellorsville did not leave the infantry Corps intact. Stonewall Jackson's Corps was split in two, which resulted in two of the division comanders under Stonewall Jackson being promoted to Corps commanders. One of them was Richard Stoddert Ewell. Which of the following men was NOT a division commander under Ewell during his tenure as Corps commander?

Answer: Lafayette McLaws

Instead of having two Corps with four divisions each, Lee chose to have three Corps with three divisions each. Ewell's command, the Second Corps, was comprised of Early's, Johnson's and Rodes' divisions and, with this structure, participated at the Battle of Gettysburg.
7. We are still at the post-Chancellorsville reshuffle. Since Stonewall Jackson's Corps was split in two, a Third Corps was created. Who was given command of this Corps?

Answer: Ambrose Powell Hill

Ambrose Powell Hill, commonly referred to as A.P. Hill, had previously commanded the "Light Division", the largest division in the Army of Northern Virginia, with distinction, and was chosen by Lee to command the Third Corps. The three divisions of Hill's Corps were Henry Heth's, William Dorsey Pender's and Richard Heron Anderson's. Hill's deteriorating health resulted in other people receiving temporary command of the Third Corps, something that happended more than once in the pivotal year of 1864.
8. After the Battle of Yellow Tavern (May 11, 1864) and the death of the cavalry commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, General Lee chose Turner Ashby as the new commander.

Answer: False

It was Wade Hampton who ultimately succeeded the fallen J.E.B. Stuart, after a brief period in which the Cavalry was commanded by Fitzhugh Lee, nephew of the commanding general. Hampton was the one who defeated the famous US cavalryman Philip H. Sheridan at the battle of Trevelian Station, thwarting a raid that had created a scare in the Confederate capital of Richmond.
9. As time went by it became clear to General Lee that Richard Stoddert Ewell was waning as Corps commander. Therefore, he was assigned to lead the defenses of Richmond and another, more aggressive general came to replace him on the battle-field. Who was he?

Answer: Jubal Anderson Early

Early's most noted accomplishment in his position as Corps commander was his invasion of the North, victory at the Battle of Monocacy (July 9, 1864) and his brief stand against the Federal capital of Washington. Early described that operation of his, which was practically a diversion, in order to prevent the Union officials from reinforcing their main army in Virginia, the Army of the Potomac, to Major Henry Kyd Douglas with the following words: "Major, we didn't take Washington, but we scared Abe Lincoln like hell".
10. During the "Götterdämmerung" of the Confederacy, the winter of 1864, a Fourth Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia came into existance, in order to reward a division comamnder for his excellent temporary command of the First Corps. What was the man's name?

Answer: Richard Heron Anderson

The Corps was created by the merging of units of the three exisitng infantry Corps and other reserve units around Richmond. Anderson was promoted to Lieutenant General as a reward for his already offered services, being simultaneously given command of the Fourth Corps.

Its existence however was brief, since the spring of 1865 brought the end of the Civil War. One day before the surrender at Appomattox, the Fourth Corps was dissolved and its units were merged with the First.
