1. By tradition, what happened on July 4, 1776, in the American colonies?

Answer: The colonies agreed on the Declaration of Independence

According to Denise Kierman and Joseph D 'Agnese book 'Signing Their Lives Away' twelve of the 13 colonies voted in favor of the declaration on July 2nd with New York agreeing to most likely vote in favor in a day or two. On July 4th only two delegates actually signed the document - John Hancock and Charles Thomas.

The rest of the signers did not actual start to sign the document until August 2nd however the last signature did not happen until 1781. When the document was sent to a printer on July 3rd to spread it around the colonies he mistakenly put July 4th.
2. What happened on Black Tuesday in the United States?

Answer: The stock market crashed in the U.S

On Tuesday, October 29, 1929, many Americans lost much of their wealth, due to a stock market crash. Panic began, and many people rushed to the banks to withdraw all their money, causing bank runs, where banks would lose all their funds. Many people went to the banks only to find out the bank no longer had their money, because others had taken it out and some had not repaid borrowed money in loans.

This was the start of the Great Depression.
3. What ultimately happened to the Bastille in Paris, France?

Answer: It was demolished during the French Revolution

The Bastille was taken over by a Parisian mob during the French Revolution. In a victory celebration afterwards they demolished it by hand. This event is considered the start of the French Revolution.
4. What happened to the Ottoman Sultan Selim III (reigned 1789-1807)?

Answer: He was dethroned, imprisoned and later murdered

The janissaries, a military group, rose up in revolt against Selim III. Selim III's nephew, Mustafa, betrayed his uncle and sided with the rebels, who dethroned Selim III, and made Mustafa sultan in his place. During Mustafa's reign, support for Selim still continued and an army went to Istanbul in an attempt to restore Selim to the throne. Mustafa IV ordered Selim to be executed.

The story really is very tragic.
5. What happened to the English colonists on Roanoke Island in 1587?

Answer: nobody knows

An attempt to resettle the colony on Roanoke Island was made by John White in 1587. However when he went to England to get supplies, and returned, there was not a trace of the colonists. The only clue he found was an engraving on a tree with the word "croatoan", that could have referred to the Indians close by.

However to this day, historians are not really sure what happened to the settlers.
6. What happened to U.S.S. Arizona at Pearl Harbor?

Answer: its ammunition supply was blown up and it sank the ship

During the attack on Pearl Harbor, U.S.S Arizona was hit by a bomb which sliced through the deck and went straight in to the ammunition supply and ignited the ship's entire supply of gunpowder. All the men aboard were killed instantly.
7. What happened to the body of India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru?

Answer: it was cremated

Jawaharlal Nehru suffered a stroke, and he later died from a heart attack on May 27, 1964. He was cremated at Shantivana, and the ceremony was witnessed by crowds of mourners.
8. What happened to the revolutionary, Father Miguel Hidalgo?

Answer: he was executed

Father Miguel Hidalgo was a Catholic priest who rallied Mexicans against Spain. He was later caught by the Spaniards and executed for treason, but the Mexican Revolution still went on. In September 27, 1821, Mexico formally gained her independence from Spain and started a new government.
9. What happened to Mt. St. Helens in 1980?

Answer: It erupted in the state of Washington

The eruption of Mt. St. Helens on May 18, 1980, was the most tragic and destructive volcanic eruption on American soil up to that time. In the disaster 57 people were killed, 200 homes were destroyed, along with 47 bridges, 15 miles of railroad tracks, and 185 miles of highway, in the gray ash.

When President Carter flew up in a helicopter to survey the damage, he remarked that the area looked like a moonscape.
10. What happened to the Titanic as it was sinking?

Answer: it broke in half

The Titanic was thought to be unsinkable. However on the night of the Titanic hit an iceberg that cut a hole through the entire side of the ship causing it to sink slowly. For seventy years, officials believed that the Titanic sank in one piece. However,some of the Titanic's survivors had insisted that it had broke in half while it was sinking. Later, when the wreck was found in 1985 by Robert Ballard, it proved they were right; the Titanic had broken in half while sinking. According to new theories, experts believe that the Titanic received damage to the hull while going down.

The ship's plates broke apart, cutting the ship in half.
