1. In the year 330, what name was given to Byzantium in a dedication ceremony?

Answer: Nova Roma (New Rome)

Byzantium was founded by Constantine I the Great in 324. Although it was renamed to Nova Roma, it was at the time more popularly referred to as Constantinople. Istanbul is the modern name.
2. Captain Robert Gray sailed into the Columbian River in 1792. What was so special about him?

Answer: He was the first documented white person to do this.

Robert Gray also captained the first American ship to circumnavigate the globe, in 1790, and had only one eye. He died at sea in 1806, near Charleston, South Carolina, possibly of yellow fever.
3. Who won the Battle of Fontenoy in 1745?

Answer: French

This battle was part of the War of Austrian Succession. Fontenoy is in what is now Belgium, but at the time of the battle was part of the Austrian Netherlands. Marshal Maurice de Saxe led the French into battle.
4. In which US state did 4,000 workers from the Pullman Palace Car Company go on strike in 1894?

Answer: Illinois

President Cleveland sent in some 12,000 US Army troops, and US Marshals to break up the strike. It is sometimes confused with the Great Railroad Strike of 1877.
5. The UMNO (United Malays' National Organization) was created on May 11, but in which year?

Answer: 1946

The UMNO is a right wing party and is also Malaysia's largest political party. Pertubuhan Kebangsaan Melayu Bersatu is the Malay name for the party.

Although in this year Thailand officially changed its name from Siam, it joined the UN the year before, in 1948. Italy joined in 1955. France was a founding member of the UN. The UN was founded in 1945 to replace the League of Nations.

Answer: 114

Downtown Waco, Texas, was hit by a tornado marked F5 on the Fujita scale (or Fujita-Pearson scale). Many other towns were hit by this tornado in the surrounding days, but none were so badly affected as Waco.

Christoph Schneider was born on 11 May 1966. He founded Rammstein with Richard Kruspe and Oliver Riedel. He used to play the trumpet.
