Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Edgar Cayce was an early 20th century physic who foretold that the remains of the lost city of Atlantis would be found of the coast of which of these islands?

Answer: Bimini

Edgar Cayce was an eccentric psychic who made many predictions and gained fame when some of them came true. One of his most famous predictions was made in 1938 when he claimed that the lost city of Atlantis would be found of the coast of Bimini, in the Bahamas Islands.

In 1968, an unusual rock formation was found off the coast of Bimini. To most people it looked like a mile of a square stones laid down as a road. Some scientist claim that it is not manmade, but rather a naturally occurring formation known as tessellated pavement.

Others claim that is the remains of a lost civilization. Will he ever know? Probably not, but any trip to this area would not be complete without visiting these unusual stones.
2. The mysterious Voynich Manuscript is an undeciphered work that is written on which of the following?

Answer: Vellum

The Voynich Manuscript is a medieval document written in the early 15th century on vellum. It is written in an undeciphered language and is filled with numerous drawings of unidentified plant life. One of the most post popular theories, as to its purpose, is that it is some kind of pharmacopoeia, possibly the handbook on an unknown alchemist.

Its purpose and what it says are a matter of scholarly intrigue and may never be solved.
3. Where would I need to travel to if I wanted to see the phenomena known as the Marfa Lights?

Answer: Texas, USA

For over a century, there have been stories about the unusual floating lights that have been seen floating in the area of the Mitchell Flats, just east of Marfa, Texas. Usually reported to be the size of a soccer ball, these unusual apparitions are said to float around about five to six feet of the ground.

The earliest reports of these lights date back to the 19th century. Multiple explanations have been put forth, such as ball lightning, aliens, electrical discharge from various mines in the area, and the reflection of traffic in the area.

Another idea that has been put forth is that these lights are a mirage. There are other locations on the planet that have similar lights, such as Hotalen, Norway and Kinka, Japan.
4. The unusual phenomena known as the Taos Hum is a large unidentified ape-like creature that is often seen walking in the woods in the dead of winter.

Answer: False

That statement is completely false. The Taos Hum is a buzzing sound that can be heard near the town of Taos, New Mexico. The sound is often compared to that of a distant diesel engine. Although this sound is easily heard by the naked ear, many different types of sound detection devices are unable to pick up the noise at all. And despite years of investigation by differing agencies, no one has figured out what the sound is, where it originates, nor how it is being created.
5. The mysterious Phaistos rock is believed to be the work of which ancient civilization?

Answer: Minoan

The Phaistos Disc was found by Italian archeologist Luigi Pernier and is believed to be the work of the Minoan civilization. It is not related to any other artifacts related to the Minoans and there are no other examples of this type of writing that have been found.

The inscriptions are believed to include a prayer and possibly a geometric theorem for a calendar. Several attempts have been made to decipher this disc, and there is no scientific consensus that any of them are correct. The disc has been dated to about 1700 B.C. which is curious because there was another script that was in use at that time.
6. The Anasazi Indians, who so suddenly disappeared, are known for which of the following?

Answer: Their beautiful cliff dwellings.

Little is known about the Anasazi Indians, nor why they disappeared so suddenly. They are known for their beautiful cliff dwellings, which when found, contained the remains of people going about everyday life. Food being cooked, fabric being woven, babies sleeping in their cribs. And for some unknown reason their daily existence ended all at once; it just ends. About 700 years ago, the culture disappeared, with no signs of a steady decline.

Their possessions were left behind, and their bodies were left in their homes to mummify.

Theories as to what happened range from sudden war, famine, drought and to alien abduction. What happened to this unique culture has been a matter of debate for historians for decades.
7. The rongorongo is a undeciphered system of picture writing that was discovered on several stones and wooden slabs in which of the following remote locations?

Answer: Easter Island

Rongorongo is a mysterious system of glyph writing found on a variety of artifacts on Easter Island. They are thought to be one of the few independent inventions of writing found in human history. This mysterious script was first mentioned in the mid 19th century.

It is believed to be written left to right and then from right to left on the next line. Rongorongo has about 120 symbols many of which have variations. The glyphs remain undeciphered despite numerous attempts to decode them. The true messages, which may actually contain hints about the mysterious collapse of the Easter Island civilization, may never be known.
8. First reported in 1915, in which of the following inhospitable locations might you see the mysterious "Sailing Stones"?

Answer: Death Valley

The "Sailing Stones" are found in the a dry lakebed in Death Valley known as the "Racetrack". Stones as large as 700 pounds mysteriously slide across the flat lake bed without any discernible external force. These stones do not follow a predictable path and are known to change directions abruptly.

Theories have been advance that wind and ice are involved and ongoing studies of the area have gone on for almost a century.
9. What was the term used by World War II pilots for UFOs that were seen following their planes while in and out of battle?

Answer: Foo Fighters

Foo Fighters was the name given to the craft seen by hundreds of World War II pilots. What these UFOs were is not known but theories range from aliens, German anti-aircraft weapons, to the product of war addled minds. There are some fairly amazing photographs of these things to be found on the internet.

Their presence often involved electronic interference. Foo Fighters were usually only seen from the air as opposed as surface to air sightings.
10. In 1968-1969, a series of mysterious, encrypted letters were sent to San Francisco media and police claiming to be from which of the following serial killers?

Answer: The Zodiac

The Zodiac letters are a series of four encrypted messages that are believed to have been authored by the unknown killer known simply as "The Zodiac". The letters are written in an undeciphered code and are thought to be an attempt to taunt journalists, police, and to frighten the public. Each letter is written in a different code and by the turn of the 21st century, only one letter had been decoded and the unknown serial killer was still at large.

In his letters he claimed to have killed 37 people although only four killings were conclusively confirmed. What do these letters say? Who wrote them? Is he still alive? Is the letter writer actually the murderer?
