1. When did South Africa first win the Rugby World Cup?

Answer: 1995

South Africa and Australia are the only two nations to have won the Rugby World Cup twice. South Africa beat England in the 2007 final.
2. When did Abraham Lincoln make his famous Gettysburg Address?

Answer: 1863

Lincoln made the address at the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg during the American Civil War. Lincoln was later assassinated whilst attending a play in 1865.
3. When did Julius Caesar's assassination occur?

Answer: 44 BC

Caesar was betrayed by his best friend Brutus, who convinced Caesar that there was no plot against him. Caesar was then stabbed to death by members of the Senate who had plotted against him.
4. When did Laika become the first animal launched into orbit?

Answer: 1957

The Soviet Union achieved this feat, but were unable to return Laika safely to earth. Laika died just a few hours after the launch, due to overheating and stress.
5. When did the Battle of the Somme occur?

Answer: 1916

The battle lasted from July 1916 to November 1916. It was one of the most horrific battles in terms of deaths ever to have occured. Over 1 million men died during the battle. On the first day alone the British army suffered about 20,000 men killed and 40,000 mean wounded or taken prisoner!
6. When did Pierre-François Bouchard discover the Rosetta Stone?

Answer: 1799

The Rosetta Stone was a monumental discovery as it allowed Egyptian hieroglyphics to be deciphered for the first time. This is because the stone depicted the hieroglyphics, as well as the Greek translations alongside them.
7. When did the death of Steve Biko occur?

Answer: 1977

Steve Biko was an anti-apartheid activist who died in police custody. It was initially claimed by the police that Biko had died because he went on hunger strike, but it was later discovered that his death was a result of brain damage sustained whilst in custody. No one person was found guilty of the murder.
8. When did Albert Einstein die?

Answer: 1955

He died of heart failure, and his brain was removed and preserved for scientific study.
9. When did the Crimean War start?

Answer: 1853

The war was first said to have been started due to a disagreement over the Christian shrines in Jerusalem, but was actually caused by long-running European tension over Russian European expansion. The war was lasted until 1856.
10. When did the first man swim solo across the English Channel?

Answer: 1875

His name was Matthew Webb, and he completed the 34 kilometre journey in 21 hours and 45 minutes.
