Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hanna Solf, and her daughter Gräfin von Ballestrem, were arrested for anti Nazi activities in January 1944. Sent to various concentration camps, they managed to survive because of the staus of their late husband/father, Wilhelm. What was his position?

Answer: Ambassador to Tokyo

Frau Solf, and her daughter attended several tea parties for the upper classes, where the overthrow of Hitler was discussed openly. In September, 1943, one of these parties was infiltrated by Gestapo agents. The women were treated with kid gloves by military officers who remembered Wilhelm.

They were released, by mistake in 1944, due to a paperwork error. They then disappeared until the end of the war.
2. She was the only legitimate child of Himmler. She remained his favorite until the day he died.

Answer: Gudrun

To this day, Gudrun does not understand the hatred her father's name causes (nor did he, either!). She married after the war and raised her own family. Today she runs a charity to aid former members and families of SS members.
3. Magda Goebbels did what while her children were being murdered?

Answer: Played patience (card game)

Magda's six children were drugged to induce sleep, then cyanide capsules were crushed in their mouths. (Magda could not do the final act herself. She had a doctor in the bunker perform it.) A short time later, she and husband Josef committed suicide. Russian soldiers found the bodies later in the courtyard outside, lined up in a neat row.

The body of the eldest daughter bore bruising around the mouth, suggesting that she had some idea of what was happening, and struggled.
4. The infamous SS guard, Irma Grese, holds the distinction (if one may call it such) of being the first woman, as well as the youngest, to be hanged for war crimes. How old was she when the sentence was carried out?

Answer: 22

Grese took great enjoyment from watching experimentation on female inmates, especially if it disfigured them. She was known to be amoung the most cruel of guards, male or female. She was known by many nicknames, among them the "Belle of Auschwitz" and the "Blonde Beast".

She was hanged at Hameln on 13 December 1945, following the Belsen trial late in 1945. Her plea for clemency had been rejected on the grounds that it was contrary to Allied policy to grant clemency to any concentration camp guard convicted of murder.
5. Hitler's sister Paula was very close to him, and was a frequent guest at his homes.

Answer: False

As soon as Hitler came to power in the 1930s, he requested that Paula stop using the name Hitler, and that she tell no one of their relationship. She never left her native Austria, and never was welcomed by Hitler in any of his residences. She died, unmarried and alone in Austria, still keeping silent about her infamous brother.
6. SS members were obligated to divorce their wives if they proved unable to bear children.

Answer: True

To bear as many "racially pure, Aryan" children as possible was of utmost importance to Himmler, leader of the SS. Even taking a mistress for the sole purpose of bearing children was justified. (Himmler himself had at least one mistress, and two children, including his only son).
7. Sophie Scholl, along with her brother and several friends, formed this anti-Nazi group.

Answer: The White Rose

Sophie was captured after she and her brother hurriedly distrubited anti-Nazi pamphlets at university. Although they never revealed the other members' names, even under torture, she was executed, as well as her brother.
8. This woman was the most highly decorated female aviator in Germany. She once even offered to fly a V-2 rocket directly into London, an offer that was declined by Hitler.

Answer: Hanna Reitsch

Reitsch was a test pilot who idolized National Socialism and Hitler. Along with her lover, General von Griem, she flew into the centre of Berlin during the last days of the war, so that Griem could be formally appointed as Goering's successor after the latter's dismissal and given the requisite baton.
9. Sister Teresia Benedicta was a Carmelite nun who was gassed at Auschwitz on August 8, 1942, in retaliation for the anti-Nazi activities of Dutch Catholic Bishops. She was canonized in 1998. What was her birth name?

Answer: Edith Stein

Born a Jew, she converted to Catholicism in 1922. As the holder of a doctorate in philosophy, she wrote and taught all over Germany. In 1932, she used her position to urge Pope Pius XI to condemn Nazi policy. Later that year, she lost her postion at university because of her Jewish origin.

Many who knew her at the camp said she spent her time there comforting people, regardless of their religion.
10. Hitler was a witness at the wedding of this 16-year-old to SS officer Hermann Fegelein. She was also his future sister in law. What was her first name?

Answer: Gretle

Eva Braun is said to have made her sister's wedding in the image of her own dream wedding to Hitler. At the end of the war, a very pregnant Gretle left Berlin for the comparative safety of Southern Germany. Her husband, Hermann, was a staff member to Hitler and had to stay at the bunker. Several days before Hitler's suicide, Hermann went missing.

He was found drunk, disrobed, and in bed with his long time mistress, a suitcase full of money and jewels next to the bed. He was shot on the orders of Hitler. Eva protested, but it did no good. Gretle survived the war, but the name of Hermann was never to be spoken again in her home.
