Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which decade saw the first person set foot on Antarctica, the discovery of X-Rays, and the first publication of "The Jungle Book"?

Answer: 1890s

The 1890s, sometimes referred to as the "Mauve Decade" or "The Gay Nineties", saw a large volume of classic literature published, including Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine" and "War of the Worlds".
2. The Hundred Years' War broke out in which decade which also saw the birth of England's Edward the Black Prince, and a famine in China kill an estimated 6 million people?

Answer: 1330s

The Hundred Years' War, fought as a large number of battles between Britain and France, commenced in 1337 and in fact lasted well over 100 years, to 1453. Edward, born Edward of Woodstock but much later nicknamed the Black Prince, had the dubious distinction of being the first Prince of Wales not to later take up the English throne. However, he was the first Knight of the Garter.

Answer: 1950s

The 1950s were a busy time in technology: they saw the introduction of the first credit card (1950), colour television (1951), the polio vaccine (1952) and velcro (1956). In sport, the four minute mile was broken by Roger Bannister (1954) and Melbourne, Australia, hosted the first Olympic Games in the Southern Hemisphere (1956).
4. Which decade in history saw Captain James Cook set foot on Australian soil for the first time, along with the Boston Tea Party and the publication of the book "The Wealth of Nations" by economist Adam Smith?

9. Which decade of the 19th Century saw Charles Dickens publish his classic "Tale of Two Cities", the Crimean War, and the installation of the first elevator with a safety mechanism by American industrialist Elisha Otis?
