Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many cards are dealt out to each player to begin the game (in a 4-player game)?

Answer: 7

Each player starts with seven, then they pick up a card. In two-player games, 500 rummy is played with 13 cards per person.
2. I cannot pick up the second card from the discard row.

Answer: False

In 500 Rummy, you can pick up as many cards as you need.
3. How many cards are allowed to be in the discard row?

Answer: Unlimited

It doesn't matter how many are in the discard row.
4. How many points are the cards 2-9 worth (according to Hoyle rules)?

Answer: Their face value

Many players use 5-10-15 scoring in which all pip cards less than a 10 count 5 points for easier counting, but official rules ask for the exact face value.
5. How many points are 10s and face cards worth?

Answer: 10

10s and face cards are worth more than the other number cards.
6. How much are Aces worth?

Answer: 15

They are the highest cards in the game.
7. Can you go out and not discard any cards?

Answer: No

You must discard a card to go out.
8. What happens when the other person goes out?

Answer: You lose the amount in your hand

If you have 100 points on the board and you have a two in your hand, you end up with either 95 or 98 points for the round, depending on the rule agreed upon for pip cards 2 to 9 (they can either count as the exact number, or, for easier counting, be all considered worth 5).
9. Can I go into the negative point score?

Answer: Yes

If you have 15 points on the board, and you have 35 points in your hand when the other person goes out, you end up with -20 points for the round.
10. You don't have to play through to 500.

Answer: True

You can just play one round.
