Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which bid is worth the most?

Answer: No trumps

No trumps is the highest of all suits and a bid of slam no trumps can win (or lose) a game.
2. Why is the game called 500?

Answer: Players need to score 500 points to win.

A score of 500 points will win the game, a score of negative 500 points will lose the game.
3. What is a six spades bid worth?

Answer: 40 points

Six spades is the lowest bid and is often used to start the game. It is also sometimes used to indicate a poor hand to a partner.
4. Which card must you hold in order to bid 10 hearts?

Answer: The Joker

The Joker overrides all other cards. The other cards would be very helpful but a skilled player could win without any one of these.
5. In a diamonds call, which is the third most powerful card?

Answer: The jack of hearts

The game 500 enhances the value of jacks. In a diamonds hand, the value of the cards start at Joker, then the jack of diamonds, then the jack of hearts, then the ace of diamonds down the usual card value. In a black hand, the two black jacks are ranked in the same way.
6. What is the goal of a game of misere?

Answer: To lose every trick

Misere is the antithesis of 500, players aim to lose every trick. Should they win a single trick, they lose the overall hand.
7. How many cards are collected from the kitty when a winning bid is reached?

Answer: 3

The winner of the bidding round can then trade their three worst cards for the three left over from the deal.
8. What is the difference between open and small misere?

Answer: When playing open misere, all players can see the misere hand, in small misere they cannot.

Open misere is a very difficult game to win as your opponents can see exactly what is in your hand and therefore can play their hands appropriately. In small misere, the players cards are hidden so the players opponents must make educated guesses on how to play their hands.
9. In four-handed 500, the two of diamonds can be used to win a hand if diamonds is the suit which is "on"?

Answer: False

Twos, threes and black fours are excluded from the deck before dealing. A Full deck is used in five-handed, and 11s, 12s and red 13s are added for six players.
10. How many cards are dealt in a standard game of 500?

Answer: 43

Each player receives ten cards and there are three reserved in the "kitty".
11. Which of the following describe the deal pattern?

Answer: 3,4,3

Each player receives three cards, then one is placed in the kitty, then four cards, one in the kitty and then three cards and the final card in the kitty.
12. In a game of 500, which card will win this trick?

Answer: It depends which suit is "on".

Even the lowest card can win a trick against aces and jacks if it is a trump card.
13. Which game is most similar to 500?

Answer: Bridge

Although Bridge has a more complicated bidding system and different playing rules, the concept of tricks and trumps still applies to both games.
14. Which hand is worth more points: small misere or 7 hearts?

Answer: small misere

Small misere is worth 250 points whereas a seven hearts bid is worth 200.
15. Which of the following can be a bower?

Answer: The jack of spades

Only jacks can be bowers and only when the "on" suit is of the same colour.
