Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From which of the following nuts is the confectionery 'marzipan' made from?

Answer: Almonds

Marzipan is made from crushed almonds and honey, and is a white paste. It is sweet and can be used to make any number of delicious baked goods or treats. Sources differ about where exactly marzipan originated, but it was somewhere around the Mediterranean Sea.
2. Which of the following nuts do not grow in trees?

Answer: Peanuts

Most nuts are grown in trees, and can cause a reaction in people with a tree nut allergy. Peanuts do not grow in trees; they grow underground as part of a small plant. The peanut allergy is different from the tree nut allergy. The coconut allergy is also different, even though coconuts grow in trees.
3. Which of the following nuts is mentioned in the Bible?

Answer: Almonds

Almonds are mentioned in the Bible many times, as early as Genesis. The only other nut to be mentioned in the Bible is the pistachio, also in Genesis.
4. Which of the following nuts grow with 'apples'?

Answer: Cashews

The cashew tree grows cashew apples, and the nut is the seed that grows out of the bottom. The nut can be harvested, roasted, and transported across the world, but the apple is too fragile. The apple is a tasty fruit and is consumed where they grow.
5. Which are the largest of these four nuts?

Answer: Coconuts

While peanuts, almonds, and cashews are all about a centimeter or two in length, the coconut grows to about 15 centimeters in diameter (and can be much larger).
6. Which of the following nuts are legumes, and closely related to kidney beans?

Answer: Peanuts

Legumes include kidney beans, peas, and peanuts. That's right. Peanuts don't just look like the nut version of a pea. They are actually closely related, genetically.
7. From which of the following nuts is the delicious drink Pina Colada made from?

Answer: Coconuts

Pina Colada is Spanish for "strained pineapple". It is made using pineapple juice, coconut milk, and rum. The Pina Colada was invented in Puerto Rico, and became the national drink in 1978. It was made famous by the Rupert Holmes song "Escape", released 1978.
8. Which of these four nuts is most closely related to apricots and nectarines?

Answer: Almonds

Almonds belong to the genus Prunus (same root as the word "prune"). If you ever crack open a nectarine pit, the seed inside will look very similar to an almond. More broadly, the almond is a drupe (stone fruit), which includes cashews, coconuts, and a vary large number of different fruits. Peanuts are legumes, and more closely related to beans and vegetables than fruits.
9. Which of the following nuts has a crab named after it?

Answer: Coconuts

Coconut crabs are the largest land invertebrates in the world. They can grow to be a meter in length, and have beautiful colours. Despite its name, coconuts are only a small part of the coconut crab's diet. They can use their strong claws to pull or smash apart coconuts they find. They can climb trees, both to escape, and to knock down loose coconuts.
10. Which of the four nuts has a distinct aroma and flavour due to the presence of the toxin cyanide?

Answer: Almonds

Cyanide is a simple molecule that can kill humans very quickly with a large enough dose. Cyanide is found in almonds, and contributes to its distinct odour and flavour, but it comes in very low amounts. Virtually all commercial almonds are sweet almonds. You would have to eat upwards of 1000 (possibly 20000) almonds within a few hours to reach the LD50 (lethal dose for half of the population). Bitter almonds (which are deliberately much more difficult to acquire) can have an LD50 of around only 30 almonds.
