Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. United States: People from the southern or Midwestern part of the US often eat a popular breakfast dish that is composed primarily of flour. It can be spicy or mild but never sweet. What is this dish?

Answer: Biscuits and gravy

American biscuits have been likened to a scone, but they are softer, fluffier, and usually made with buttermilk. They never have fruit in them. Pork sausage was very common in rural life. The grease from the cooked sausage was turned into a white sauce called gravy, using flour, milk and water.

The spiciness of the meal depends on the sausage and how much black pepper the cook adds. The biscuits are split in half and then buried under the gravy. Mmm... Good eating.
2. Canada: A popular Canadian breakfast dish is Canadian bacon strata. The main ingredients are Canadian bacon, eggs, cheese, English muffin halves and a few spices. When this dish is prepared on the East Coast of Canada, what is usually substituted for Canadian bacon?

Answer: Crab or lobster

More seafood than pork is consumed on the East Coast of Canada, so when this dish is prepared there, crab or lobster is usually used instead of Canadian bacon. This tasty dish is quite easy to make and is well worth the effort.
3. New Zealand: In New Zealand many people enjoy toasted Vogel's and Marmite for breakfast. What are they eating?

Answer: toasted grain bread and yeast spread

Marmite is the New Zealand equivalent of Vegemite. Vogel's is a delicious heavy grain bread made to a recipe first developed by the Swiss nutritionist, Alfred Vogel, which for some reason really caught on in New Zealand and has become New Zealand's distinctive bread product. Most of us would spread butter or margarine before the Marmite, and maybe add a slice of cheese or tomato on top.
4. Australia: These flaky wholegrain "biscuits" are a huge cereal hit with the Australian public. They are made by the Sanitarium company. What are they eating?

Answer: Weet-Bix

The Sanitarium company was started up in 1898 by a baker called Edward Halsey, who had a vision about keeping people healthy. A peanut butter product was the first product sold by Sanitarium in 1898. Weet-Bix was first made by Sanitarium in 1928, and has a become a breakfast tradition in both Australia and New Zealand.
5. Dominican Republic: This dish is a breakfast staple in any Dominican household with its main ingredient of mashed plantains.

Answer: Mangu

It is made by mashing boiled green plantains and adding a little salt, pepper, water (or a flavoured stock) and butter to it. It's commonly eaten as part of breakfast accompanying fried salami or as a side dish, just like mashed potatoes.
6. France: This is a flaky pastry commonly found in French bakeries. It is made in a crescent shape and has been a common breakfast dish since the 13th century.

Answer: Croissant

The croissant was made to be an imitation of the moon, which was idolised by the French.
7. Kasha is part of a typical Russian breakfast; it is a type of porridge. From what grain is kasha made?

Answer: any of these

Russian breakfasts also include omelettes and blini, thin pancakes served with smetana (sour cream) or cheese.
8. United Kingdom: Quite a few people in the UK eat black pudding with their breakfast. What are the main ingredients in black pudding?

Answer: Oatmeal and pig blood

The contents can vary across Europe, but in the UK black pudding is pig blood and oatmeal. The taste and consistency aren't bad if you can ignore what you're actually eating.
9. Southerners in the United States often enjoy hominy grits with their breakfast. What is the main constituent of grits?

Answer: Corn

Hominy grits are made from coarsely-ground corn kernels, and are very nutritious. When seasoned properly, they are quite tasty.
10. In Spain and South American countries these are a popular breakfast item with a coffee or hot chocolate. They are deep-fried pastry strips coated with sugar and cinnamon. But what are they called?

Answer: churros

Churros are delicious for breakfast or any time of the day. Chimichangas are Mexican filled pancakes. Cazuelas are saucepans or stews. Churruscos are the crusty ends of a loaf or caterpillars.
