Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We'll start off with a couple of simple mascots. While not created specifically to advertise the cereal, which popular classic cartoon characters advertise the cocoa and fruity variety of "Pebbles" cereal?

Answer: The Flintstones

Originally a reintroduction of a cereal called "Sugar Rice Krinkles" the branding of a product around a media character was a new concept. By 1969 "Cocoa Pebbles" and "Fruity Pebbles" had been introduced on the west coast and soon gained popularity across the US.

The original commercials consisted of Fred and Barney interacting with live action children. By the late 70s, commercials were entirely animated usually featuring Fred and Barney and occasionally other characters from "The Flintstones".
2. There are so many cereals that have animals as their mascots. One in particular let's people know how good his cereal is. In fact, he doesn't think that it's just good, he thinks it's "GR-R-REAT"! Who is this cereal mascot?

Answer: Tony the Tiger

Tony first appeared advertising "Frosted Flakes" in 1951 and was often seen with popular radio and television personalities in his commercials. He has been voiced by a several different voice actors, but none as long lasting as Thurl Ravenscroft who voiced him from 1953 until his death in 2005.
3. Some mascots have branched out and advertised other products than just their trademark cereal. One such mascot has also advertised for yogurt with the same name as their cereal. Unfortunately, unlike many cereal mascots, this rabbit can never get his hands on either and as the children will tell him, "Silly rabbit,________ are for kids!"

Answer: Trix

"Trix" was introduced in 1955 and in 1959 is when Tricks the rabbit made his television debut. In most commercials, Tricks is unable to get the cereal and the children will usually snatch it away from him. On occasion Tricks has been able to get the cereal and there have been promotions in the past as box top mail-in contests where the results were overwhelmingly in favor to let the rabbit have his Trix.
4. "Cheerios" has had numerous flavors in its span as a product. "Honey Nut Cheerios" in particular has a mascot who is still around today. What animal is the mascot for "Honey Nut Cheerios"?

Answer: Bee

BuzzBee who interestingly wasn't named until 2000, was introduced in 1979 along with the cereal. He was voiced by comedic actor Arnold Stang until 1992 and since then voice actor Billy West has voiced him. BuzzBee has been doing a fantastic job advertising the cereal, so much that "Honey Nut Cheerios" is the best selling cereal in the US.
5. "Rice Krispies" has a trio of mascots that advertise the cereal. Who are these three elves with onomatopoeic names?

Answer: Snap, Crackle, & Pop

Introduced in 1933, the trio originally had an elderly gnome design, but soon took on their elvish, more youthful look. There was a fourth elf briefly introduced in the 1950s named Pow.
6. Not all mascots are so easily recognizable. One character from the Quaker company has made a resurgence in the past few years. Who is this kooky pink alien with a propeller on his head that advertises his namesake cereal?

Answer: Quisp

"Quisp" was introduced in 1965 along with its partner cereal, "Quake". Quake was a miner character featured in the commercial with Quisp the alien, but Quisp was more popular in comparison. Another cereal "Quangaroos" was introduced in the 70s with a kangaroo mascot named Simon and Quake with an Australian bushranger design, but again "Quisp" outranked "Quangaroos" and the new cereal was discontinued. "Quisp" gained more notoriety with the advancement of the internet and can be found for sale on the Quaker Oats online store. "Cap'n Crunch" is another Quaker product, and with a similar taste to "Quisp", it's no wonder why people don't recognize "Quisp" as much.
7. "Lucky Charms" has been a popular cereal over that past several decades. In the commercials Lucky, the cereal's mascot is usually trying to keep the cereal to himself and keep it out of the hands of the children. What creature of lore is Lucky?

Answer: Leprechaun

Lucky made his appearance in 1963 and true to a leprechaun's nature, he is mischievous and is constantly trying to protect his treasure, in this case the cereal. There has been many different marshmallows introduced in the roster over the years, but oddly enough, the pot of gold marshmallows were never around permanently.
8. As we have seen, most cereal mascots are an animal or a human character. This mascot isn't as animated as most, maybe due to the fact it is not an animal or person. Which of these cereals does not have an animal, human, or any other creature as its mascot?

Answer: Raisin Bran

Introduced in 1966, Sunny has been the sole mascot for the Kellogg's brand of raisin bran. You can always find him holding the two scoops of raisins found in every box.
9. Around the Halloween time, stores usually see General Mills monster themed breakfast cereals. The most famous of these mascots of course is Count Chocula. There were also Franken Berry and Boo-Berry which usually appeared in commercials with the Count. However, there were two other monsters that were in the same line of cereals, but were less popular and faded into obscurity. What were the names of the other two monster mascots?

Answer: Fruit Brute & Yummy Mummy

Introduced in 1974, "Fruit Brute" was a assorted fruit flavored cereal much like "Franken Berry", but with lime-flavored marshmallows. It was discontinued in 1982 and in 1987 "Fruity Yummy Mummy" came on the market essentially being the same cereal, but with vanilla-flavored marshmallows. "Fruity Yummy Mummy" was discontinued in 1992. "Fruit Brute" has a Werewolf as its mascot and "Fruity Yummy Mummy" of course had a mummy as the mascot. Both cereals had a brief relaunch in 2013 only to be discontinued a year later.
10. This wouldn't be much of a quiz about cereal mascots if Captain Crunch wasn't mentioned. On the boxes of "Cap'n Crunch" we usually just see the Captain by himself. In the commercials however, Captain Crunch has a nemesis who is usually up to no good. What is the name of Captain Crunch's pirate nemesis?

Answer: Jean LaFoote

Jean LaFoote is seen in the commercials along with Captain Crunch and is usually trying to steal the Captain's cereal. In the mid-1970's LaFoote advertised his own cereal, "Cinnamon Crunch".
