Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you are playing Bridge, you need to know which two suits are known as the Majors. Can you name them?

Answer: Spades and Hearts

Spades ranks 1st, Hearts 2nd, Diamonds 3rd and Clubs 4th. Spades and Hearts are the Majors and score more points for tricks when bidded for.
2. It's Blackjack in the Casino, you have 6H and 6D, making a total of 12. The dealer is showing 4C. If you are playing the percentages, what is the correct move here?

Answer: Split

12 is a poor number for Blackjack, so you should split the sixes. Although sixes are still poor cards and you now have two bets, you could always hit a two, three, four or five. If you do hit tens with the sixes you will have to stand and hope the dealer busts, which is quite likely with a four starting card.
3. You are playing Cribbage, your hand consists of the JH, 5C, 5S and the 6D, the cut card is 4H. What is your hand score using these cards?

Answer: 17

You have (fifteens x 4 = 8) (runs x 2 = 6), (pair x 1 = 2) and one for the nob.
4. You have 10H and JH as your hole cards at Texas hold 'em Poker. The flop has come AH, 8C, 7S and the turn has come KH. There is now just the river card to come and you need to hit a run or flush to win. How many outs are there for you to hit either a flush or a run?

Answer: 15

There are 15 outs, nine Hearts are left in the pack for a flush and four Queens and four nines would give you the run. The 9H and QH are cards that can be used for both the flush and a run but can only be counted once.
5. Brag is a very popular card game, especially in Britain. But what is the best hand in all forms of Brag?

Answer: Prial of threes

A prial of threes is the best hand followed by a prial of aces then kings and so on. The most popular Brag games are three Card Brag and 13 Card Brag (Crash).
6. You are playing Knock-out Whist (a.k.a. Trumps). There are four players left and you are down to six cards. Your cards are JS, 8S, 4S, 2S, 2D, 8C. Diamonds are chosen as trumps and the other players play these cards, KH leads, 5D trumps it, 3H follows suit. You are last to act, but which card would be the best to play?

Answer: 8C

The 8C is very unlikely to win a trick, so your best hope would be to clear yourself of Clubs and hope someone leads a Club into the next trick. Hopefully then you could trump it with the 2D and sneak through to the next round with this very poor hand.
7. You have just played a hand of Hearts and you only took one trick. The trick contained 9C, 4C, KH, 4H. How many points would be added to your total from this trick?

Answer: 2

You would only get two points from this trick, each Heart is worth one point and the QS is worth 13 in a game of Hearts. The aim of the game in Hearts is to score the fewest points.
8. In a game of Casino (a.k.a. Cassino) which card is known as big casino?

Answer: 10D

10D is known as big casino and scores two points and 2S is known as little casino and scores one point.
9. Which rank of card is the highest in a standard game of Bezique or Pinochle?

Answer: Ace

The ace is the highest rank in Bezique and Pinochle, as it is in most games. Unusually the ten is the second highest followed by the king, queen, jack and finally nine in a game of Pinochle. The cards go down to seven in a game of Bezique. Both games use two packs, meaning you use 64 cards in Bezique and 48 in Pinochle.
10. What is the highest score and therefore the best score in a hand of Baccarat?

Answer: 9

Cards count as face value, except tens and picture cards count as zero. As soon as a combinations of cards reaches ten it automatically becomes zero again meaning that nine is therefore the highest total.
11. Your opponent knocks at Gin Rummy, he lays down a meld of KH, KD, KC, a meld of 5C, 6C, 7C and a meld of 4H, 4D, 4C. His deadwood is the 7S. Your cards are AC, AS, AD, 4S, 8C, 8H, 10D, 10C, 10S, JS, after melding and adding to the knocker's melds, what is knocker's lowest score?

Answer: 11

You have melds of aces and tens, you can add your 4S and 8C to the knocker's meld of fours and runs of Clubs. This leaves you with 8H and JS, equalling 18, minus the 7S, giving the knocker a total of 11.
12. In a standard game of Seven Card Stud Poker, how many of each players cards are dealt face up?

Answer: four

Initially you are dealt two cards face down and one card face up. Then after a round of betting three more cards are dealt face up with betting in between and then finally one card is dealt face down.
13. Which is the highest card, also known as the right bower, in a game of Euchre?

Answer: Jack of Trumps

The jack of trumps is the highest card in Euchre, followed by the left bower which is the jack of the other same coloured suit.
14. How many cards are used in a standard game of Canasta?

Answer: 108

The game of Canasta uses two full decks of cards and four jokers, totalling 108 cards. This meld-forming game is at its best between four players but variations of the game can allow anywhere between two to six players.
15. You are opening the bidding in a game of Bridge, the cards you are holding are QS, 10S, 7S, 3S, KH, 10H, 4H, AD, JD, 8D, AC, KC, 7C. What would be the the better bid in this situation?

Answer: One No Trumps

You are not particularly long in any suit, but you have some good high cards. This is a classic One No Trumps hand.
