Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I thought we'd start with a bowl of soup. Which of these is the best choice for our white meal?

Answer: Leek and potato

Carrot and coriander soup is orange, pea and ham is green, and tomato and basil is red; all three are a bit bright for our white meal. It's probably better not to garnish the leek and potato soup with parsley or chives - they would spoil our monochromatic theme. A swirl of cream will be fine, however.
2. Next we move on to a fish course. We can have a choice, but which of these fish won't be on our white menu?

Answer: Salmon

Cod, haddock and plaice are all white, but salmon is pink, and doesn't suit our white themed meal. A velouté sauce could be added without spoiling the colour scheme.
3. Now it's time to assemble the main course. Only one of the following meats is pale enough for our white meal. Which one is it?

Answer: Chicken breast

Beef, lamb and venison are all dark meats. Provided we keep to the breast from the chicken, and don't serve the legs, our meal will keep its white colour.
4. Some potatoes to go with the meat. Which of these is pale enough to blend in with the rest of the white food in this meal?

Answer: Mashed potatoes

Both roast and sautéed potatoes will be a crispy golden brown. The jacket potatoes will be even darker. Potatoes mashed with plenty of milk and a knob of butter are the best choice to blend in with the colour scheme for this meal.
5. Only one of these vegetables fits our white meal. Which one will be suitable?

Answer: Cauliflower

Carrots are orange, sweetcorn is yellow and peas are green. None of them will blend in with the white food on our plate. Cauliflower, with all its green leaves trimmed off, is the best choice for this meal.
6. Now for a sauce to accompany the meat and vegetables. Only one of these is white - which one?

Answer: Bread sauce

Cumberland sauce is dark red, mint sauce is dark green and apple sauce is pale green. Bread sauce is made from milk, white breadcrumbs, onions and a bit of seasoning, so it stays pale enough for this meal.
7. A glass of wine could make the meal a bit special. Which of these is described as a white wine?

Answer: Riesling

Chianti, Claret and Rioja are all red wines, from Italy, France and Spain, respectively. The Riesling is a German white wine, probably produced by one of the many vineyards in the Rhine or Moselle valleys. Although it's described as a white wine, our glass will actually contain a pale straw coloured liquid.
8. A pavlova seems like a good idea for dessert - meringue, cream and fruit. However we'll need to select the fruit carefully if it's to blend in with the white colour scheme. Which of these should we choose?

Answer: Bananas and pears

Bananas and pears, peeled and sliced, will fit the bill. Raspberries and strawberries are red, mangoes and peaches are orange, and kiwis and limes are green; all are far to bright for our white dessert.
9. Time for some cheese. We still want white food, so which of these is the most appropriate?

Answer: Camembert

Edam is a yellow cheese, covered in red wax, which comes from the Netherlands. Double Gloucester comes from the United Kingdom, and is a pale orange cheese. Gorgonzola is an Italian blue-veined cheese. Camembert comes from Normandy in northern France; it is a soft creamy coloured cheese coated in an edible white rind.
10. You might like to finish your meal with a coffee, but I'll have to disappoint you because it's the wrong colour. You can have a cup of hot or cold milk, though, and I'll let you have some sweet treats to go with it. Three of these are fine, but which one won't I offer you?

Answer: Chocolate fudge

While coconut ice, marshmallows and peppermint creams may be produced in other colours, they are all readily obtainable in white. Chocolate fudge, however, will be a rich dark brown, and just as unsuitable as that coffee.
