Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1972 Everyone is talking about the new world champion of chess. Who is this hard-to-find character?

Answer: Bobby Fischer

Bobby Fischer won the world championship on September 1st 1972 from Boris Spassky. He won the championship from Spassky a full 5 points ahead. (In tournament chess, a win is worth 1 point, a draw is worth 1/2 a point.)
Fischer didn't play another public game until 1992, again against Spassky.
2. 1939 The brother of the world chess champion, Alexey, has just been murdered! Who is the world champion?

Answer: Alexander Alekhine

Alexander Alekhine's brother Alexey was killed for his involvement in a love affair in 1939. Alexey was a good player in his own right. He was Alexander's first and only real teacher.
3. 1997 People all over the chess world are studying the games of the recent man vs. machine match. Everyone knows that IBM's Deep Blue beat Gary Kasparov in that match, but which grandmaster was consulted on the construction of Deep Blue?

Answer: Joel Benjamin

Joel Benjamin was there the entire way to help with the chess aspect of Deep Blue. Benjamin is a former US champion as well as an internationally known player.
4. 1857 "The pride and sorrow of chess" has just won the first American Chess Congress. Who is this brilliant player, who would later be named (with Fischer) as a charter member of the US Chess Hall of Fame?

Answer: Paul Morphy

Morphy was born in New Orleans in 1834. He only played tournament chess for a little more than 2 years. Most people would agree that he suffered a mental breakdown and went insane near the end of his life. There are stories of him walking down the street and introducing himself to figments of his own imagination.

He died in 1884 at the young age of 47: he was, indeed, the pride and sorrow of chess.
5. 1988 Two men were inducted into the US chess hall of fame in 1988. Hermann Helms was one, the other was known for inventing the ratings system that is in use all over the world to keep track of who is better than who in chess. Can you name him?

Answer: Arpad Elo

Elo invented the fairly complicated ratings system that began to be used in 1970 to keep track of where players rank. He also was president of the American Chess Federation, which merged with the National Chess Federation of the USA to become the United States Chess Federation.
6. November 23rd 1888 The chess champion of the world becomes a citizen of the United States. Most people regard him as an Austrian world champion. Who is he?

Answer: Wilhelm Steinitz

Steinitz was the first official world champion of the modern world. He defeated Zukertort in 1886 in the first formal match for the title. He lost the title in 1894.
7. 1989 In Belgrade the longest game of chess under international time controls and rules is played. It was played by Nikolic and Arsovic. How many moves did it last?

Answer: 269

This game was played in Belgrade. It is in the "Guiness Book of World Records" as the longest chess game ever played. The game ended in a draw.
8. 2004 This wonderful musician known for playing the piano and singing countless hits, including "Georgia On My Mind" dies. He was known to be an avid chess player. Who is he?

Answer: Ray Charles

The world will miss Ray Charles. The fact that he loved to play chess is made all the more astounding by the fact that he was blind. Sting is also an avid player. David Bowie, Dustin Diamond, Kobe Bryant and Bill Cosby are also known to have (or have had) a love for the game.
9. AD 300-AD 600 Chess evolved from a game that began in this period. What was it called?

Answer: Chaturanga

Chaturanga originated in India sometime between 300 and 600 AD. It was similar to chess in that it was played on 64 squares. The game included a king, rook and knight that moved the same as the pieces do in the present game. One big difference was that it was played with 4 people instead of 2.
10. 1930 The revolutionary book "My System" is first published. Who was the author?

Answer: Aron Nimzovitch

"My System" is still considered by many to be an essential read for the serious student of the game of chess. Nimzovitch's name comes up a lot when playing chess today, as his name has been attached to the Nimzo-Indian defense as well as many other variations of openings and defenses. Nimzovitch is also known for having some rather strange things happen to him at tournaments, including once breaking his leg while playing. Who says chess isn't a contact sport? I hope you enjoyed the quiz, thanks for playing!
