Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Firepower is defined as the military capability to direct force at an enemy. Which one of the following war movies does not depict significant firepower?

Answer: Stalag 17

The opening war scene in 1998's "Saving Private Ryan" was acclaimed by veterans as the closest any movie had come to depicting the horrors of war. The movie, initially recounted the troops landing on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, 1944. This scene showed the immense scale of war and fire power.

"Gallipoli was a 1981 Australian war film in part depicting the landing of the ANZACs in what was to be known as Anzac Cove and the almost impossible fight they had to displace the might of the Ottoman Empire's firepower raining down upon them.

"The Battle of Britain" was a 1969 British movie that accurately illustrated the German Luftwaffe's failed attempt to defeat the British RAF, in the hope that Britain would surrender. The movie was expensive to make as real aircraft were used in the filming to depict the aerial firepower of the two countries.

"Stalag 17" (1953) was a prisoner of war film where American airmen try to escape from a prison camp. While the film is a war movie, there is little combat revealed. William Holden won his Oscar for his role as J.J. Sefton in this movie.

This question was powerfully written by Phoenix Rising team member 1nn1.
2. In Alice Cooper's 1975 hit "Department of Youth" he proclaims that the nation's youth have the power. In the fade out he asks the children (as back-up singers) who gave them the power. How do they respond?

Answer: Donny Osmond

"Department of Youth" was the lead single from Alice Cooper's first solo album "Welcome to My Nightmare" (1975). (Note) All of his previous releases were as a band that went by the name Alice Cooper. The album loses some of the gritty edge that Cooper showcased with his band and there is a definite theatrical lean to the record. Despite that, "Department of Youth" is Cooper at his fist pumping best and midway through the number he releases several children to assist him close out the track. This mainly consists of Cooper singing out "Who's got the power" and the children responding with "We have". Just as the sound is about to fade out, Cooper yells "And who gave it to ya?" When the children yell "Donny Osmond" an aghast Cooper screams "WHAT!"

Donny Osmond was a teen idol in the 1970s, was raised as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah and represented everything that Alice Cooper didn't. Osmond had hits in this decade with songs such "Go Away Little Girl" and "Puppy Love".

This question was shocked into existence by Phoenix Rising team member pollucci19.
3. A superhero is a heroic stock character, usually possessing supernatural and or superhuman powers. He or she is dedicated to fighting the evil of their universe, protecting the public, and usually fighting "super-villains" To do this mighty work superhuman powers come in handy however not all superheroes have superpowers. Which one of the following superheroes is the ONLY one with inherent super powers?

Answer: Superman

Superman is the archetypal superhero blessed with such powers as super strength, super speed, heat vision, x-vision, ice breath, and of course, the power of flight. Superman first appeared in 1938, some time before the following.

Batman on the other hand had to rely on mortal powers to protect his city particularly his prowess in face to face combat. Partly because of his lack of superpowers, Batman has often been relegated from superhero to vigilante

Tony Stark, a mere mortal, is Iron Man. He only has powers when he puts on his technology-drenched Iron Man suit which has most of the powers a conventional superhero might need.

The Phantom first appearing as a 1936 comic book character has no superpowers and relies on his strength, intelligence, a mysterious past and identity and reputation as a fierce warrior to defeat his enemies. He is thought to be immortal but as faithful comic book readers we know immortality is merely father -son hereditary.

This question was conjured up by Phoenix Rising team member 1nn1 who has no doubt about his status as a mere mortal.
4. In the multi-player browser game "MouseHunt" by HitGrab, Inc, trap effectiveness for catching mice is determined in part by its power. How is trap power calculated?

Answer: Based on the components of the trap

MouseHunt started out as an application on the social media platform Facebook. In MouseHunt, the hunter (player) is tasked with catching mice throughout the Kingdom of Gnawnia. The equipment for catching mice are a trap and the bait (cheese, what else?). The trap consists of three parts: a weapon, a base, and an optional charm. Its power, or strength, is the sum of the powers of these components plus any power bonuses they may have. A more powerful trap would enable the hunter to catch mice more effectively. Hunters may acquire more powerful trap components as they progress through the game.

This question was set by Phoenix Rising team member purelyqing.
5. The 1988 Sega (MS) video game "Power Strike" involves which of the following plot lines?

Answer: A supercomputer seeks to kill the human race

DIA51 is a man-made super-computer that has been infected by a hybrid virus and now it wants to destroy every living human being on the planet. It makes one mistake, it injures Yuri, who is the girlfriend of the game's chief protagonist, Ray Waizen. Ray jumps into his Aleste fighter plane with one mission on his mind... to bring down the super-computer.

"Power Strike" is a shoot 'em up video game that was developed by Compile for use in the Sega Master System. It was first released in Japan in February 1988 under the name of "Aleste".

This question was programmed by Phoenix Rising's non-gamer pollucci19.
6. "The Power of One" (1989) is the story of Peekay who overcame many personal setbacks to conquer his life. The novel was written by Bryce Courtenay who was born in South Africa. What nationality was Mr Courtenay?

Answer: Australian

Bryce Courtenay was born in South Africa in 1933. He emigrated to Australia via London with his wife in 1958 where he had an acclaimed advertising career before starting a writing career well into his fifties. He wrote stories about Africa and Australia. "The Power of One" set in Africa was his most popular. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1995. in 2012 just before he died, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Canberra.

This question was written in Australia by Phoenix Rising's 1nn1.
7. In the official video of Huey Lewis and the News' "Power of Love", what car (possibly best associated with the 'Back to the Future' franchise) was powered up and 'driven' off by some curious teenagers?

Answer: DeLorean

Huey Lewis and his band proclaim the power of love is: "... strong and it's sudden and it's cruel sometimes, but it might just save your life". The song speaks of the strength of love in the assorted scenes of life. It was written in 1985 by Huey Lewis, Chris Hayes and John Colla.

The DeLorean, which became a time machine when it reached 88 mph, was powered variously by horses, banana peels (and other garbage) and plutonium to reach the required 1.21 gigawatts of power. In the 'Power of Love' video, the teenagers jump in when Doc Brown gets out and go for quite the ride.

No garbage was used in the creation of this question by Phoenix Rising member, VegemiteKid.
8. More Firepower. Being a bit of a nerd, one of ozzz2002's favourite shows was 'MythBusters'. The hosts, Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman especially liked to blow things up. What was the warning cry to cast and crew that was issued when the explosion was imminent?

Answer: 'Fire in the hole!'

'Sturm und Drang' translates as 'storm and stress' and was a literary movement characterised by dark and scary themes.
'Timberrr' would probably be more appropriate for a lumberjack, and 'thar she blows' was the cry of the lookout on a 19th century whaling ship.
"Fire in the hole" has its origins in the mining industry when a warning that an explosion in a closed space is imminent. As soon as a charge was set, this warning was yelled out to warn other miners.

In ozzz's opinion, Adam and Jamie had the best jobs ever! Imagine getting paid to blow things up, wreck things, build intriguing stuff and generally have a lot of fun. They have investigated such things as raising a sunken boat with ping-pong balls, finding a needle in a haystack or shooting fish in a barrel, but the explosions are the highlights for me. One that comes to mind is the experiment that was originally designed to loosen solid concrete in a cement mixer- they over-calculated (on purpose?), and in the resulting BANG, the entire truck was obliterated. Oh, what fun!

This question exploded from the mind of Phoenix Rising team member ozzz2002.
9. Originally called the Soul Gems, which stones are, arguably, the most powerful force in the Marvel Comics' Universe?

Answer: The Infinity Gems

There are six Infinity Gems in total. Individually these stones can produce extraordinary feats but, when they are combined, the person wielding them has the power to tear the very fabric of time and space apart. The stones were formed when the universe first came into existence and they each represent one of the essential cores of that creation. These are;
The Soul (it is the green one), Power (red), Time (orange), Reality (yellow), Space (purple) and the Mind (blue). The first gem to appear in the Marvel comics was placed on the forehead of Adam Warlock by the High Evolutionary and the first person to combine all six gems was Thanos. Thanos proceeded to use it to wipe out half the population of the universe in order to win Death's love.

The remaining items above all come from the DC Comics universe.

This little gem of a question was brought into existence by Phoenix Rising team member pollucci19.
10. Power comes in many forms in 1996's "Absolute Power" we witness political power. In this movie we see Clint Eastwood as a thief witness a murder. Who played the the antagonist in this movie who just happened to be the President of the United States?

Answer: Gene Hackman

Gene Hackman has a drunken extra-marital affair with a family friend. The scene gets violent and the woman is shot dead by the President's bodyguards. This is all witnessed by Clint Eastwood who is hiding as he was disturbed whilst robbing the house. The title is a reference to "absolute power corrupts absolutely". The thief who becomes the chief suspect for the murder, has to prove the culpability of the US President. A fine film which demonstrates the abuse of power at the highest levels;

All the actors listed have played at one time the US President.
