Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While playing Funtrivia, my monitor suddenly went dead. (During a timed game, of course) I shook my mouse in desperation and started "turning the air blue". What in blue blazes was I doing?

Answer: Swearing

Swearing. According to Macmillan dictionary, it means "to swear many times or use a lot of rude words when angry". It seems to have been around at least since the 1800s (Farmer & Henley, Slang and Its Analogues 1890).

This did happen to me once, and I ended up with a miserable three hour time score. The cat had hit the off switch on one of my power bars that was on the floor. The poor cat hid under the bed during the cursing. As "Old Farts Turn The Air Blue", is the name of this particular quiz, this question seemed appropriate.

Question by Hermit007
2. Which band had a 1968 hit with a heavy metal cover of Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues"?

Answer: Blue Cheer

Off their debut album, "Vincebus Eruptum", the song peaked at the number 14 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was to be their only singles hit and has been cited by some as the very first heavy metal recording. The group was put together by Dickie Peterson in San Francisco as a power trio the year before.

Question by njbruce
3. In which 60s TV show did Mark Slade play Billy Blue, son of Big John Cannon?

Answer: The High Chapparal

Although Slade had many acting roles, he is always remembered for playing the part of Blue. "The High Chapparal" was set in 1870s Arizona and the majority of the story lines had nothing to do with ranching, instead they centered around the ranchers' relationship with their Apache neighbours. In the episode "Apache Trust" Blue was kidnapped by the Apaches, the chief of whom was played by Academy Award nominee, Chief Dan George.

6. In the film "Blues Brothers 2000" what was the name of the band that beat The Blues Brothers Band into second place in the final of the battle of the bands?

Blues Traveller had entertained us earlier in the film and the other two acts? I just made them up.

Answer: The US Navy flight demonstration squadron

The stated mission of The Blue Angels is: "To showcase the pride and professionalism of the United States Navy and Marine Corps by inspiring a culture of excellence and service to country through flight demonstrations and community outreach." 12. Colors mean different things in different countries. For instance, while the color of mourning is black in most of the Western World, it is white or red in many others. Similarly, "being blue" doesn't mean "depressed" in all cultures. What does "being blue" mean to a German?

Answer: being drunk

The expression goes back to wool-dyers of the Middle Ages. Wool was dyed with Dyer's Woad. Dyers knew that the dye-yield could be improved by the addition of alcohol. However, they didn't just add simple alcohol to their dye batch, but, as noted in ancient formulas, the urine of men who had consumed too much alcohol was particularly well-suited to the process. This dyeing method was replaced at the beginning of the 18th century; however, in Germany, the phrases "being blue" or "making yourself blue" remained.

13. A good luck tradition says a bride should be wearing or carrying four things. One is something blue, one is something new, one is something old, but what is the missing item?

Answer: Something borrowed

Something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue is one of the few wedding traditions that doesn't seem to be all about fertility. Something old hearkens back to family ties and ancestry. Something new looks forward to the new life the couple will build together. Something borrowed is a promise of help to be given by family and friends when times get tough. Finally, something blue is because blue was an ancient Roman symbol of love, fidelity and purity.
