Question 3 of 10
3. During the California Gold Rush, many prospectors flocked west to strike it rich and stake their claim. What year did this take place? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. There are other techniques to finding gold, one of which is a process called dredging. Dredging is just as it sounds. Using a suction dredge, prospectors can suit up in their finest wet suit, and get down in the water sucking up material which is then pumped into a sluice box. From here the material is washed and the concentrates collect into the sluice. Is dredging good or bad for fish habitats? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. When gold panning, after you have reduced your material (big rocks) down to your concentrates, You are ready to classify. Mixed in with the gold, there is a material that consists of a blend of magnetite, hornblende, hematite and other minerals. It is very heavy and is found with gold. What is the term for this material? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Gold is mined both as a hobby and commercially on every continent except which one? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Gold is not only precious, but very very soft. Pure gold is so soft a single ounce of pure gold (very rare) can be stretched into a wire how long without breaking? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. For practicing your gold panning skills before you hit the riverbeds and streams of North America, you can use your gold pan and practice with heavy material and water in a tub. What can you put in your material (heavy rocks and sand) to ensure your recovery of the items to make sure you're doing it correctly? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Gold panning can be exciting as well as laborious. Needing only a gold pan, a shovel and a ton of patience, it can be a very rewarding experience. The best places to look for nuggets are streams, rivers, ravines, lake areas and dry ravines. The mother lode has yet to be found. What is the estimated percentage of lode gold yet to be found in the world? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Outlawed since 1884, this technique used was extremely productive but very destructive. Entire hillsides were washed away with highly pressurized water, sending tons of mud down into the rivers below. What was the term for this technique? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The G.P.A.A. or Gold Prospectors Association of America, was founded in 1968 to preserve the heritage of the American gold prospector. Who was G.P.A.A.'s original founder?

Answer: George Massie

George "Buzzard" Massie, born in 1939 in Norfolk, Virginia. Massie started the G.P.A.A. in his garage in 1968 and published his first magazine in 1973. In 1993 he co-founded the Outdoor Channel and started his TV show in 1998. Buzzard passed away in 1998 and left the legacy to his son, Tom Massie who now runs the G.P.A.A. out of Temecula, California.
2. The high price of gold has enticed people to become amateur gold prospectors, spending their weekends searching for that highly sought after yellow metal. There are several tools you will need to alleviate your "gold fever". What are the first things you need if you are going gold panning?

Answer: shovel, gold pan and a bucket

If you just want to go gold panning, you need a shovel to dig your material which you place in your bucket. Then, you will use your gold pan (preferably green because you can see the gold easier). There are other tools you will need such as a snuffer bottle, classifier, panning magnet, plastic scoop and more. It's all about the gold, baby!
3. During the California Gold Rush, many prospectors flocked west to strike it rich and stake their claim. What year did this take place?

Answer: 1848

In January 1848 James Wilson Marshall struck gold while constructing a saw mill along the American River near what is now Sacramento. The discovery was reported in the San Francisco newspaper, but no one believed the finding. Until May of that year when storekeeper Sam Brannan in Sutter's Creek, took in a small bottle filled with gold dust and cried "Gold! Gold! The American River has Gold!", thus sparking the California Gold Rush.

Answer: It's predominantly good

It's great for fish habitats. The process of suction dredging does not harm fish and actually improves their habitats. By dredging, this creates pockets in riverbeds and streams for fish to lay their eggs in. These depressions are called refugia.
5. When gold panning, after you have reduced your material (big rocks) down to your concentrates, You are ready to classify. Mixed in with the gold, there is a material that consists of a blend of magnetite, hornblende, hematite and other minerals. It is very heavy and is found with gold. What is the term for this material?

Answer: black sand

Black sand a mixture of magnetite, hematite, tellurides and sulfides. It is very difficult to deal with and it is very heavy. Its density is about 5. That is it is about 5 times heavier than water. Since gold is heavy as well, gold panning prospects have over the years tried to invent new techniques and devices to remove the black sand that is mixed with the gold.

They used to use mercury to get the gold out because gold amalgamates with mercury, but mercury is poisonous to handle and bad for the environment.
6. Gold is mined both as a hobby and commercially on every continent except which one?

Answer: Antarctica

I'm not saying there isn't any gold in Antarctica, but it's virtually impossible to get to it! Several factors play into this:
Antarctica is the coldest place in the world. In some places in Antarctica the ice is more than 13,200 ft - that's two and a half miles deep. Also, miners would have to sail through the some of the roughest seas in the world to get there and then transport back the gold. Hardly seems worth it at all.
7. Gold is not only precious, but very very soft. Pure gold is so soft a single ounce of pure gold (very rare) can be stretched into a wire how long without breaking?

Answer: 50 miles

Pure gold is so soft, in fact, that a single gram can be beaten into a sheet of one square meter! Also, pure gold is so soft you could mold it with your hands. It is very rare to find pure gold. The gold we see and handle in jewelry is mixed with other metal alloys to hold its shape.
8. For practicing your gold panning skills before you hit the riverbeds and streams of North America, you can use your gold pan and practice with heavy material and water in a tub. What can you put in your material (heavy rocks and sand) to ensure your recovery of the items to make sure you're doing it correctly?

Answer: steel bb's

Steel BBs, possibly with a lead core, are used to perfect your procedure while gold panning. You should put 5 BBs in your base material before you begin. Once you start reducing your materials down to a concentrate you should end up with 5 BBs in your pan.

This shows you that you've done the panning technique correctly! Note: you should practice over a large tub of water to catch any fallen materials.

Answer: 80%

Gold is found in areas where lode deposits and erosion have occurred. It is estimated that over 100,000 tons of gold are still in the earth just waiting to be found. The estimated amount of gold in seawater is 9 billion metric tons. Got the gold fever yet?
10. Outlawed since 1884, this technique used was extremely productive but very destructive. Entire hillsides were washed away with highly pressurized water, sending tons of mud down into the rivers below. What was the term for this technique?

Answer: hydraulic mining

While Hydraulic mining generated millions of dollars in tax revenue in the 1880's, it had a devastating effect on the environment in California. Millions of tons of earth were dumped into mountain streams that fed rivers. This massive amount of earth sediment slowed and widened rivers causing them to rise and shift new channels which caused them to overflow their banks which in turn created massive floods.

In 1884 the United States District Court in San Francisco deemed hydraulic mining was "a public and private nuisance" and ultimately outlawed it.
