Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What year was the first documented Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest?

Answer: 1972

Legend has it that the first contest was held on July 4, 1916 at Nathan's Famous stand on Coney Island by four immigrants to settle an argument about who was the most patriotic. There is no proof of that contest and no other proof exists of any contest at Nathan's Famous prior to 1972.
2. Which United States holiday was the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest most associated with being annually held on?

Answer: Independence Day

Independence Day has been the holiday which has held the most contests. In 1978 the annual contest was held on Memorial Day.
3. Men and women have never competed against one another at the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest.

Answer: False

Men and women competed against each other until 2011 when the inaugural women's event took place.

In 1984, Birgit Felden from Cologne, West Germany won the contest by eating 9 ½ hot dogs in ten minutes, becoming the only female winner.
4. Throughout all Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contests in the 20th century, which duration of time had not been used for the length of the contest?

Answer: 15 minutes

12 minutes and 10 minutes were by far the most used times for the contests. The first two contests in 1972 and 1974 ran for 3 ½ minutes and 6 ½ minutes was used at least once, in 1978.
5. A contestant of the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest was required to eat the hot dog and the bun to receive a score.

Answer: True

Contestants however were not required to eat the hot dog and bun at the same time. Each hot dog partially consumed counted and was measured in eighths of a length.

"Juliet-ing" was a form of cheating in which a contestant simply threw the hot dog bun over their shoulder.
6. The 2003 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest was the first year a celebrity contestant competed. What bear of a former National Football League player won a qualifier by eating 12 hot dogs?

Answer: William Perry

William "The Refrigerator" Perry had quite a disappointing showing at the contest. He ate only four hot dogs and retired after five minutes.

All players listed as answers played for the 1985 Chicago Bears. Congratulations Matt Suhey for making my quiz.
7. The Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest used a penalty card system. A yellow card could be issued as a warning for what infraction?

Answer: "Messy eating"

Each contestant had a designated scorekeeper paired with them. "Messy eating" could inhibit the scorekeepers judgment and could result in a deduction from the eater's final totals. "Reversal of fortune" (Regurgitation), was a disqualification. "Dunking" was allowed, as was the jumping up and down tactic known as the "Carlene Pop", which helped force the food down to the stomach.
8. It was forbidden by the rules of the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest for contestants to put condiments on their hot dogs.

Answer: False

Indeed condiments were allowed, but not many contestants used them.
9. Such a heralded sporting event, showing the grit, hunger and will to compete, deserved a momentous award. What signature award that was lost for more than two decades in Japan and rediscovered in 1993 was the men's victor of the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest given possession of?

Answer: Mustard Yellow Belt

The coveted International "bejeweled" Mustard Yellow Belt was awarded the men's winner. The woman's winner was awarded possession of the "bejeweled" Pink Belt.

The winner of the first contest in 1972 was awarded a certificate for forty more hot dogs.
10. What New York City borough was the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest associated with?

Answer: Brooklyn

The contest was known for being held at the Nathan's Famous Corporation's original, and most famous location in Coney Island, a neighborhood of the borough of Brooklyn, New York City.
