Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Open-faced grilled cheese, butter, bread

Answer: Cheese Dream

Cheese Dream sandwiches were very popular during the Great Depression in the United States as a dish for Sunday supper. They were, however, probably eaten earlier as a 1918 article in "Good Housekeeping" mentions the Cheese Dream as a luncheon dish. Its popularity was probably due to the fact that it is easy to make, either on top of the stove, in the oven, or under a broiler, and the variety of additional ingredients that can be placed on the sandwich, including tomatoes, pickles, olives, bacon, eggs, or whatever else one likes to eat. Today there are many different variations that use different types of bread.
2. Cheeseburger with the cheese inside the patty, bun

Answer: Jucy Lucy

To make a Jucy Lucy (sic!), just take two patties of ground beef, place a piece of cheese in between, and seal the edges so that the cheese stays inside the hamburger as it is cooking. This is said to keep the meat near the center of the burger very juicy.

There are two eateries in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Matt's Bar and the 5-8 Club, that both claim to have invented the sandwich. Any condiments that are normally eaten with a cheeseburger - pickles, onions - complement this sandwich, complete with your favorite cheese.
3. Roast pork, Swiss cheese, salami, ham, pickles, mustard, Cuban bread

Answer: Cuban

The Cuban is considered to be a type of ham and cheese sandwich; it originated in early Cuban communities in Florida in the late 1800s-early 1900s. At that time Cuban communities more easily migrated to the U.S., so it is difficult to pinpoint exactly where it began. Sources say that in order to make a Cuban, Cuban bread must be used.

It is a white bread that is baked in a long baguette (usually 3 feet long), much like French bread; the extra ingredient that is included, however, is some type of fat, either lard or vegetable shortening.

There is some disagreement as to whether salami is an absolute necessity on the sandwich, but most agree that the only condiment that belongs on this sandwich is mustard!
4. Ground beef, sloppy joe sauce, bun

Answer: Manwich

The Manwich was introduced by ConAgra Foods and Hunt's in 1969 and is named for the use of the canned sauce produced by the company. Of course, the sloppy joe has been around since the 1940s, with many different names, but the seasonings (onions, bell peppers, celery, Worcestershire sauce) were added by the cook. With a Manwich sandwich, all that needs to be done is brown the ground beef (or ground turkey, etc.) and include a can of the Manwich sauce. What mom doesn't love the ease of that? "A sandwich is a sandwich, but a Manwich is a meal".
5. Turkey, bacon, Mornay sauce, bread

Answer: Hot Brown

Also known as a Louisville or Kentucky Hot Brown, the Hot Brown originated in 1926 at the Brown Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky. Its popularity was probably due to the fact that Americans at the time viewed turkey as viewed as more of a holiday food; this sandwich could be ordered any time. An open-faced sandwich, after the ingredients are added it is baked or broiled until the cheese is bubbly.

Some may substitute a different type of cheese for the Mornay sauce and add other ingredients, such as ham, tomatoes, mushrooms, or pimentos.
6. Ham, provel cheese, paprika, garlic butter, Italian or French bread

Answer: Gerber

The Gerber is a St. Louis, Missouri, classic! Named for a customer at Ruma's Deli in 1973, it is another open faced sandwich that is served hot. In 2003 Ruma's Deli became involved in a controversy with another St. Louis restaurant in a trademark infringement case concerning the use of the name of their sandwich, claiming that they could not include a "Gerber" on their menu. Of course, whatever the sandwich is called, it is yummy! It was included in a 2015 list of the "The 50 Best Sandwiches in America" in "Men's Journal".
7. Meat, cheese, condiments, bread in layers

Answer: Dagwood

Named for Dagwood Bumstead in the comic "Blondie", the Dagwood sandwich was first drawn by Chip Young in 1939. There is no specified size or list of ingredients, however, there is typically a toothpick with an olive on top. Many different restaurants have marketed their own version of the sandwich, and it is even popular in South Africa, where it is usually served with a fried egg.
8. Turkey, cheddar cheese, cranberry, roll

Answer: Pilgrim

Also called a Puritan sandwich, the Pilgrim uses typical foods found on tables in the United States during Thanksgiving. What better way to use all those Thanksgiving leftovers? In fact, those very leftovers have created variations on the sandwich. How about some stuffing and gravy on the sandwich too? Any type of bread can be used, including corn muffins, and bring on the condiments! Thousand island dressing, onion, celery, parsley, and gherkins are all allowed!
9. Ground beef, onions, melted cheese, hero roll

Answer: Chopped Cheese

A very popular sandwich in New York City, a "chopped cheese" sandwich is also called a "chop cheese". Some sources claim that the sandwich originated at a grocery store in Harlem, however, others discuss its similarity to a Middle Eastern sandwich called dagha yamneeya.

The hero roll is the name used in New York City for an oblong roll cut lengthwise to make the sandwich. Typically served with lettuce, tomatoes, and other condiments, and it is compared to a cheeseburger or a Philly cheesesteak. Why is it called a chopped cheese? The ground beef is broken into pieces as it is cooking.
10. Pastrami, knackwurst, Swiss cheese, hot mustard, rye bread

Answer: Sailor

A popular sandwich in the Richmond, Virginia area, the New York Deli, established in 1929, has claimed to have been the first to make a sailor sandwich. In 1934 the deli was moved to Virginia, where many of its customers were Navy sailors during World War II; the sandwich at the time had no name, and no one really knows when it became known as the sailor sandwich. Did you know that there is also a sandwich called the marine sandwich?
