Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In-N-Out is a cherished California institution, and has enjoyed widespread popularity and fanatical loyalty even beyond the Golden State. Which of the following has contributed most to the company's success?

Answer: Commitment to quality

In-N-Out's commitment to quality is a big part of its image - one that has inspired a cult following, and allowed it to infiltrate certain areas that other fast food restaurant chains have not.

While the company has used television ads, radio spots, billboards, and other forms of advertising, it has not taken a very aggressive approach to marketing. It's probably fair to say that In-N-Out has benefited more from word of mouth and unsolicited celebrity endorsements. In keeping with founding principles, the company remains one hundred percent family-owned. It has not gone public, nor permitted any stores to franchise.
2. In what year did the iconic In-N-Out boomerang arrow make its first appearance?

Answer: 1954

The arrow, which climbs to the upper left then boomerangs down and right, replaced the original "No Delay" sign in 1954. According to In-N-Out, associates adopted the sayings, "The arrow points to pride" and "We all work under the same arrow". Befitting its perch on the famous Route 66, store #26 in San Bernardino, California features retro In-N-Out signage starring the "No Delay" slogan of yore. Executed by CNP Signs & Graphics, the design elements are at once nostalgic and recognizably In-N-Out.

As dreadful as it sounds, In-N-Out was not around in 1946; and the arrow was certainly in use long before the end of the twentieth century.
3. Which of the following menu items was available for order at In-N-Out during its first ten years of operation?

Answer: Bottled soda

In-Out Out offered bottled drinks until 1958 when it introduced fountain service. At the time, a 12 oz. cup of soda cost just a dime.

"Animal Style" offerings first appeared in 1961, and the Double-Double made its debut in 1963. Milkshakes only arrived on the scene in 1975.
4. Which devilish celebrity chef enjoyed In-N-Out so much that he admitted, "In-N-Out burgers were extraordinary. I was so bad, I sat in the restaurant, had my double cheeseburger then minutes later I drove back round and got the same thing again to take away"?

Answer: Gordon Ramsay

Ramsay enjoyed his first eye-opening In-N-Out experience while taping the television reality show Hell's Kitchen in Los Angeles. Did you pick up on the "devilish" clue?

Famed chefs Thomas Keller, Mario Batali, Daniel Boulud, and Anthony Bourdain have all but professed their undying devotion to In-N-Out. The great Julia Child was also a big fan.
5. What are the words to the popular In-N-Out jingle?

Answer: In-N-Out, In-N-Out, that's what a hamburger's all about.

For a full version of the jingle, look no further than Youtube! The jingle is also downloadable as a ringtone from the company website, along with a copy of the In-N-Out original theme song.

The incorrect answers should read as follows:
1) "Have it your way, have it your way! Have it your way at Burger King!"
2) "So when you're getting hungry for some happy eating, Sonic is where it's found."
3) "You deserve a break today, so get up and get away, to McDonald's."
6. In-N-Out developed a robust corporate infrastructure that includes which of the following?

Answer: In-N-Out University

After the death of founder Harry Snyder in 1976, leadership of the company passed to his younger son, Rich Snyder. Rich had a vision for expansion that necessitated a system to professionalize management, and thus the In-N-Out University was born. The University began operations in 1977 from store #1 in Baldwin Park. In 1984, Rich moved it around the corner to a dedicated facility on the site where the Snyder family home stood back in 1948. Generally, associates were eligible for University training after demonstrating managerial potential (including strong initiative, decision-making, and people skills) during one year of full time employment at a store. The ultimate goal was to provide effective training to entry-level managers with a focus on food quality, cleanliness, and customer satisfaction.

There is no official In-N-Out Boot Camp. In the fictional Marvel Comics universe, "Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters", later renamed "Xavier Institute for Higher Learning", served as a school for mutant teenagers. Sadly, there is no evidence to suggest that the X-Men or their student prodigies had any knowledge of In-N-Out.
7. A reference to what Biblical adage is discreetly printed on In-N-Out fry boats?

Answer: Proverbs 24:16

In-N-Out has quietly printed Biblical citations (just the references, not the actual text) on some of their paper containers and other items since at least 1987. Proverbs 24:16 reads, "For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again, but the wicked shall fall by calamity". "Adage" is synonymous with "proverb", so hopefully that little clue got you pointed in the right direction.

John 11:35 reads simply, "Jesus wept". Many will recognize it as the shortest verse in the Bible, but it does not show up on any In-N-Out packaging. Revelation is the last book of the Bible, but there is no chapter 23. Snyder is the surname of the company founders, Harry and Esther, who established the first In-N-Out burger in 1948.
8. In March of 2011, this freakish ace pitcher for the San Francisco Giants revealed to USA Today that his conditioning involved regular chow downs at In-N-Out. His usual order: three Double-Doubles without lettuce or tomatoes, two fries with ketchup, and a chocolate-strawberry shake for a grand total of 3150 calories.

Answer: Tim Lincecum

Lincecum, nicknamed "The Freak", suffered some knee soreness later in 2011 that prompted him to lose some weight. He made what must have been a gut-wrenching decision when he reportedly gave up In-N-Out for the 2012 off-season.

Pablo Sandoval played for the San Francisco Giants as an infielder. Sandy Koufax pitched for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers. He retired from professional baseball in 1966 at the peak of his career on a run of six phenomenal seasons. David Carr is a professional football player who served a brief stint with the San Francisco 49ers as backup quarterback to Alex Smith. He was released in July 2011, whereupon he re-signed with the New York Giants as backup QB to Eli Manning.
9. In 2011, In-N-Out continued its expansion into a fifth US state. The celebration was probably bigger than ever. Which state opened its first two In-N-Out restaurants on May 11 that year?

Answer: Texas

The celebrations had to be bigger than ever because everything is bigger in Texas, right? The move was made possible by the construction of a brand new In-N-Out warehouse and patty-making facility in Dallas. The company maintains its emphasis on quality and freshness in part by ensuring that all stores are no more than a day's drive from one of its warehouses.

Its first foray outside of California was into Nevada in 1992. In-N-Out continued to beef up operations and expanded into Arizona in 2000 and Utah in 2008.
10. At In-N-Out, customers may order any number of custom menu items from the not-so-secret "Secret Menu". One such item is the veggie burger or wish burger, which is a sandwich without meat or cheese. The name "wish burger" is a nod to what unsavory-sounding doo-wop song famously covered by the Blues Brothers?

Answer: Rubber Biscuit

"Rubber Biscuit" was recorded by The Chips in 1956. It took off instantly on East coast radio, but Dan Aykroyd's performance of it as Elwood Blues made the song a cult hit. The song alludes to poverty and its effect on food options. One of the lines reads,"Have you ever heard of a wish sandwich? A wish sandwich is the kind of a sandwich where you have two slices of bread and you - hum hum hum hum - wish you had some meat!"

While equally inedible, none of the other options are actually recorded songs.
